The coronavirus may have been lying dormant across the world until emerging under favourable environmental conditions, rather than originating in China, an expert has claimed.

Dr Tom Jefferson, from the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (CEBM) at Oxford University, has pointed to a string of recent discoveries of the virus’s presence around the world before it emerged in Asia as growing evidence of its true origin as a global organism that was waiting for favourable conditions to finally emerge.

Traces of COVID-19 have been found in sewage samples from Spain, Italy and Brazil which pre-date its discovery in China. A preprint study, which has not been peer reviewed, claims to have found the presence of SARS-CoV-2 genomes in a Barcelona sewage sample from 12 March 2019.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Dr Jefferson has called for an investigation into how and why the virus seems to thrive in environments such as food factories and meatpacking plants.

Along with CEBM director Professor Carl Heneghan, Dr Jefferson believes this could potentially uncover new transmission routes, such as through the sewerage system or shared lavatory facilities.

He told the paper: “Strange things like this happened with Spanish Flu. In 1918, around 30 per cent of the population of Western Samoa died of Spanish Flu and they hadn’t had any communication with the outside world.” [It is however believed that the Spanish Flu arrived at the island nation in the cargo ship Talune in 1918]

Meatpacking plants are often at 4°C, which is the ideal temperature for the coronavirus to be stabled

“The explanation could only be that these agents don’t come or go anywhere. They are always here and something ignites them, maybe human density or environmental conditions, and this is what we should look for,” said Jefferson.

“There is quite a lot of evidence of huge amounts of the virus in sewage all over the place, and an increasing amount of evidence there is faecal transmission.

“There is a high concentration where sewage is 4°C, which is the ideal temperature for it to be stabled and presumably activated. And meatpacking plants are often at 4°C.

“These outbreaks need to be investigated properly.”

Game changing evidence I think.

An Oxford University expert believes that the novel coronavirus may not have emanated from China, rather it stayed dormant across the world and turned up when the environmental conditions were congenial for it to thrive.

Dr Tom Jefferson, senior associate tutor at the Centre for Evidence-based medicine (CEBM) at Oxford and visiting professor at Newcastle University, argues that there is growing evidence that the virus was elsewhere before it appeared in Asia, reports The Telegraph in an exclusive report.

Last week, Spanish virologists announced they had found traces of the disease in samples of waste water collected in March 2019, nine months before the coronavirus disease was seen in China.

Italian scientists have also found evidence of coronavirus in sewage samples in Milan and Turin, in mid-December, many weeks before the first case was detected, while experts have found traces in Brazil in November.

Agree with this. It's been around for longer than we realise. People have been dying of it longer than we realise. This article makes sense. So many people who died rapidly from respiratory failure due to unknown causes may well have had this virus.

Hope those yelling "China virus" pause with their vitriol and now consider such matters scientifically.

. .
If you look at the science, it obviously didn't. The numbers were extremely high in the West because it was already spreading unnoticed and misdiagnosed for quite a long time. Also, the percentage of those with antibodies in Western cities were far higher than even in Wuhan, China's epicenter. The fact that it didn't spread that much in China meant that it was only recently introduced into Wuhan and thus the spread was largely contained. In addition, China had only one strain of the virus while the West had all major strains of it which points to the likelihood of origin.

This won't matter to those who just want to bash or hate China because this issue has been extremely politicized. So they will do whatever they can to associate this disease with China already a huge body of scientific proof demonstrates that China was not the origin, but likely the US or Western Europe.

Another blow to the dumb heads of the Indians:omghaha:

The facts don't matter. China haters will still pin this on China. They will just say Oxford or whatever institution sold out to China and was corrupted.

China mostly had one strain but also found others after many months even possibly year or years of the virus being around the world. Some Australian university researchers working with English ones proved four or five months ago this virus may have been around the world for years possibly even 10 years already. Antibodies count in tested patients in USA are ridiculously high suspiciously. They also had much higher than usual death count in 2019 from just conditions explained as flu. Somehow their 2019 higher than usual total medical deaths is same number roughly 15-20% higher which is exactly same as measured now!

The multiple strains found in the USA could just be because the virus has been around the USA for already a long time. Not that it started there.

Anyway they always will blame and talk about China. Everything no matter what. China when we found a bubonic plague patient reported the news and USA talk like it's special. Every year about 7 Americans on average are found with bubonic plague. China finds one patient in years and they talk like it's a Chinese virus even though this original black plague virus was finally traced to Norway region hundreds of years before it appeared anywhere on Asia.

Very much so. Whomever is responsible for with-holding such information deserves either a firm kick in the butt, job-loss, or even death. But that's just *my* opinion. And MANY MANY MANY other opinions need to be heard (PROPERLY), before the guilty can be brought to trial or the assassination-squads.
