The whole point of the article is that the Indian response to American demands for Iran's isolation will have an impact on American calculations of India's reliability as an ally. You guys may deny that you are an 'ally', but that's the whole deception game that India has been playing.
Deceptions are not played out so openly, they go much deeper. The think tanks in America are not stupid to let go of India just because it sides Iran. For that matter US till now sided with Pakistan, did we let go? It is mutually beneficial for both India and US. What America says and calculates are depended on their understanding. Many things factor in, for example
1. India is a democracy and a stable state, it will not take stupid decisions.
2. India has a great economic engine running.
3. India is sufficiently capable to meet its security threats.
US wants to be more involved with India. If you think reading stuff here and there is enough to know their reasons and consequences of diplomacy.. you should think again.
This thing with Iran is serious stuff that the policymakers and Pentagon really care about. This is not some people-appeasing PR stunt like climate change and carbon trading legislations.
That's precisely the point! The American romance with India 'coincides' with China's rise. Lately, the Americans have come out openly about where they view India in their geopolitical agenda for Asia. It's no secret any more.
Iran being an enemy of Israel and Israel being friendly with us is a good example for you to analyse more profoundly!
