The Big Story:The Secret 'K' Missile Family

k4 is polaris missile?? than how did India acquire the designs and technology?

.
India today article does not talk about anything new except the testing part of Agni III SLBM in January 2010 and the air launched missile. ( air launched missile news was already out 2 months back)

1. Agni III SLBM was tested with 2 stages (10 m) and it will be tested with 3 stages (12 m) (as per the article). The range increases significantly with increase in number of stages.

Range of Agni III SLBM with 3 stages

5200 km @ 1500 kg payload

11,000 km @ 750 kg payload

source: India's strategic missiles by Arun Viswakarma

Warhead options

Agni III SLBM will be armed with a mixture of FBF warheads and TN warheads since TN warhead designs need confirmatory tests.

550 (Fusion boosted fission warhead or FBF) yield 150 kilotons yield
(Single warhead can produce 10 times the Hiroshima effect)

or

250 kg (Thermonuclear warhead) yield 200 kilotons yield
(Single warhead can produce 10 times the Nagasaki effect)

2. Shourya or K15 is a Hypersonic Boost Glide Missile, which has a boost Phase and a sustained Hypersonic cruise and glide Phase at 40 km altitude (as per India today article)

Video of Hypersonic Boost Glide Missile Shourya test late 2008

YouTube - India's Shaurya Missile Launch

Shourya (Land Version) is under production since early 2009, according to front line article and K15 (Naval version) under production since early 2009, according to India Today article.

Missile success

It is stupid to think that k15 (naval) is mass produced not
Shourya (land) which is basically the same missile.

Don't expect Ministry of defence to come out and say to 500 main stream India media, "hey we are mass producing a high speed nuclear missile and now we can jump up and down". It is not going to happen.

Shourya/ K15 Hypersonic boost glide missile range

1900 km @ 180 kg FBF warhead (17 kilotons yield)

1500 km @ 340 kg TN warhead (200 kilotons yield)

1200 km @ 550 kg warhead (150 kilotons yield)

750 kg @ 1000 kg ( older design warhead which may not be used )

Newer design warheads not only weigh less but also have more yield.

As far as induction of Agni III SLBM only in 2017, it is purely a speculation by Mr India Today. He assumed that there will be only one test per year. Agni III SLBM will be inducted much earlier. Again don't expect its induction date and ceremony on Zee TV news or PTV news, since it is a strategic program, It will be kept under wraps. Anyways see ya all. Seed has been sown !!

note: India is also working on another long range Hypersonic Boost Glide Missile called Agni II (AT) AT- stands for Advanced Technology. Early 2011 there will be a test according to Live fist/http://livefist.blogspot.com/2010/10/improved-agni-ii-to-be-tested-this.html.

US is also working on long range Hypersonic boost glide missile under a program called Prompt Global Strike. Lot of research going on boost glide re-entry vehicles.

Advantages of Hypersonic boost glide missile
1. High speed (Hypersonic)
2.Cannot be intercepted
3. Accuracy (This is the reason why it can be armed with a conventional warhead)

This missile has no relevance to the Indo-Pak scenario and India at least in the near future is not going to be a global military power. The Indian Army Chief has in the past clearly mentioned that Indian forces are primarily defensive.

How does India plan to benifit from this missile??

dude, this is just not about being super power. this is a science and technology section. It shows the capability of a country to develop such weapons. It shows the brain behind, be it intellectual, clever or intelligent. We have the knowledge to launch a missile beneath the sea. Knowledge is very important you know!! This is just technology show!!!

If we already tested K4 in jan 2010 so why we need 6 more year ???

A missile takes lot of time to be be inducted because it has to undergo various test and has to mature so that it can be inducted

I doubt the picture of submarine in the article is of Arihant. The picture on Livefist of Arihant is completely different.

Also, how come K-4 be soo similar to Polaris. Even the paint job? The content might be true but people shouldn't take the pictures for granted.

May be they are basically same but dnt you think Sea and Land based missiles have lots of difference as well

Generally many of the projects are initially kept secret like the ATV......Even the information about K-15 was not disclosed till it was tested and there are many projects of Navy which are not yet reveled
I hail from Visakhapatnam and even before the news came out about the ATV there was a rumour in the city about the development of the nuclear submarine

Good so you admit that there is no tactical, operational or strategic use of this missile. Its only purpose is to show off your technological skills.

What a waste of resources and what a waste of time. This is a defence forum please discuss the defence implications of this system or else I would suggest that post such things in some technology forum.

SIR India has "No First Use Policy".
I guess you know what this means.
As for now this is just a technological step to achieve a higher advanced technology.

You just remind that this is the defence forum. But when people post some useless thread on women and girls and relations I did not see you telling them the same.

No offense

You will definitely see use of these show off missiles in any future conflict against India
