Thirty-four militants killed in Orakzai, Kurram


KALAYA: At least 34 militants were killed and 25 others injured when military planes bombed suspected hideouts in Orakzai and Kurram tribal regions on Sunday.

Security forces attacked militants’ positions in Mir Kalamkhel, Jabba and Jandrai areas of Orakzai, killing 24 militants and destroying 11 houses, two depots of explosives and six hideouts.

The attacks also left 18 militants injured. Sources said that three explosive-laden vehicles were hit during the shelling.

Government forces moved into strongholds of militants in the Dabori area.

According to our correspondent in Parachinar, 10 militants died and seven others suffered injuries when military aircraft targeted militants’ hideouts in different areas of central Kurram.

According to official sources, security forces launched attacks in Neka Ziarat and Gawaza areas and destroyed three important hideouts.

A large number of militants had sneaked into parts of central and lower Kurram after a military operation was launched in Orakzai. A military operation started in lower and central Kurram about 10 months ago is under way.

Security personnel have cleared most of the areas and destroyed dozens of training camps and hideouts.

Over 150 militants and 18 security personnel have so far been killed in the operation.
The Thall-Parachinar Road linking Kurram Agency to the rest of the country has been lying closed for three years.

PESHAWAR: Fifteen militants were killed during military action in the Orakzai tribal region, DawnNews reported on Sunday.

Four insurgent hideouts were destroyed by a fighter jet plane during the assault on militants in upper Orakzai.

Orakzai clash kills 15 militants

PESHAWAR: Fifteen militants were killed and eight others were injured in a clash with security forces near Orakzai’s Dabori region.

Security sources said militants attacked an army check point on the Afghan top near Dabori area.

Two security officers were injured in the clash while 15 militants were killed and eight were injured.

Afghan top is located a few kilometers away from upper Orakzai’s Dabori region. – Dawn News

Talib forces must exist in considerable (as in tens of thousands) - I say this because on reads regularly about the numbers dispatched to hell in clashes with the Fauj, there seems to be an unending supply of Talib. 7 security men martyred, 6 injured in convoy attack in Khyber Agency

As many as seven persons have been killed while six others injured when a security forces' convoy ambushed in Tehsil Bara, Khyber Agency on Monday.

A private TV channel quoting sources said that the convoy was assailed near Gashtul Haj Market. As a result of which seven security personnel got killed, six others wounded and the vehicle damaged. The injured have been shifted to Peshawar while the security forces threw cordon around the areas and launched search operation.

Military jets kill eight militants in Khyber Agency

PESHAWAR: A Pakistani official says government airstrikes have killed eight suspected insurgents in the Khyber tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Local official Ameerzada Khan says fighter jets and helicopter gunships pounded suspected insurgent hideouts in Nare Baba and Sheen Drand villages in Teerah Valley on Tuesday and killed eight militants.

Two intelligence officials also confirmed the airstrikes but said 30 insurgents were killed. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. - Dawn News

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Sept 1, 2010 (AFP) - The death toll from Pakistani air strikes on militant hideouts in a northwestern tribal area Wednesday rose to 55, with reports of some civilian deaths, security officials said.

"Militants were using civilians and their families as human shields and there could be some civilian casualties but we do not know how many," a senior security official told AFP, confirming the new toll in the Tirah valley.

Two military and an intelligence official also confirmed the incident and the death toll, while local government officials said about a dozen civilians died.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Sept 1, 2010 - The death toll from Pakistani air strikes on militant hideouts in a northwestern tribal area Wednesday rose to 55, with reports of some civilian deaths, security officials said.

Pakistani jet fighters Tuesday targeted militants preparing for imminent suicide attacks and destroyed their bases in the lawless Khyber tribal district, which borders Afghanistan, security officials said.

"Militants were using civilians and their families as human shields and there could be some civilian casualties but we do not know how many," a senior security official told AFP, confirming the new toll.

Two military and an intelligence official also confirmed the incident in the Tirah valley as well as the death toll.

"At least 12 civilians were killed when jets dropped shells on a convoy," a local government official told AFP, requesting anonymity.

In April, Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Kayani made a rare public apology for the deaths of some 60 civilians, also in Tirah valley, during military operations and issued orders to avoid further incidents.

Security officials said the air strikes destroyed militant hideouts, a training centre, an illegal FM radio station and eight vehicles prepared for suicide attack in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A senior military official in Peshawar said that he had no information about civilian casualties in the air strikes.

The militants belonged to the Lashkar-e-Islam group and included fighters who fled last year's offensive by the Pakistani military in the northwestern Swat valley, the security official said.

Lashkar-e-Islam, which means Army of Islam, is a domestic Islamist group with ties to the Taliban that has caused unrest in the Khyber region, including attacks on NATO supply vehicles travelling through the area.

Khyber is on the main NATO land supply route through Pakistan into Afghanistan, where almost 150,000 foreign forces are battling to reverse an escalating Taliban insurgency, now in its ninth year.

Airstrikes kill 15 Taliban in Kurram, Orakzai

HANGU: At least 15 Taliban fighters were killed and 10 others were injured as jet fighters and gunship helicopters bombed their hideouts in central Kurram and Orakzai agencies on Wednesday, security sources said. Locals and security sources told Daily Times that jet fighters and gunship helicopters pounded Taliban hideouts at Chinark area in Kurram and adjoining areas of Dapar and Bakha in Orakzai Agency, killing 15 terrorists. Meanwhile, the death toll in Tuesday’s air raids on suspected terrorist hideouts in Teerah Valley in Khyber Agency has risen to 60. Fourteen militants killed in central Kurram Agency

KURRAM: Fourteen militants were killed on Saturday, as security forces carried out operations in Kurram Agency.

A vehicle carrying eight militants was destroyed as an improvised explosive device went off in the central Kurram area, according to sources.

Meanwhile, heavy artillery firing by security forces left six militants dead and 10 injured in the Chinark area.

Three militant hideouts were also destroyed in the attack.

Militants reportedly fled to Kurram from Orakzai Agency amid military operation.

Security forces have been engaged in an operation in Kurram Agency for the last 10 months. —DawnNews

Eight militants, soldier killed in Orakzai clash

KALAYA: Eight militants and one soldier were reportedly killed in a clash in Tapo Killay area in upper tehsil of Orakzai Agency on Tuesday, official sources said. The sources said the clash occurred after the militants attacked a security forces’ checkpoint early in the day. The sources said the forces successfully repulsed the attack, killing eight militants and injuring three others. A soldier identified as Amjad was also killed in the exchange of fire. After the incident, the security forces launched search operation in the area. However, there were no reports about any arrest.

we were sure that all the issues had been resolved; still seems that water dispute leads to tribes clash and the sectarian dimension is exploited
