Modernization Program

Frigates

Myanmar Navy has started its modernization program in 2001 in an attempt to replace older ships and equipments. In 2012, Myanmar Navy has taken delivery of 2 Type 053H1 class frigates from PR China. These 2 ships were upgraded extensively by Myanmar Navy. Upgrades to frigates include the replacing of HY 2 anti ship missiles by more lethal C 802 missiles and installing of new sensors. First indigenous frigate, F11 Aung Zeya has entered service in 2011 and took part in joint exercise with Indian Navy ships off Visakhapatnam in early 2013. Second ship of Aung Zeya class, F 12 Kyan Sit Thar, enters service in 2012 and which is the Myanmar Navy’s first stealth frigate. Third ship is under construction at Myanmar Navy Dockyard (Thilawar) and expected to enter service in 2014. Myanmar Navy plans to build 6 frigates. Myanmar Navy frigates combine Russia, India, China and western weapon system. These ships are equipped with Kh-35E anti-ship missiles, Oto Melara 76 mm Super Rapid Cannons, AK-630 6-barrel 30 mm CIWS guns and Chinese ASW rockets and torpedoes. Radars and electronic systems are mainly from Bharat Electronics of India.Myanmar is more interested in building their own ships with the help of chinese engineers. 2 Type 053H1 they bought recently are just as a stop-gap before their own frigates are ready. Myanmar acquired SAMs and AshM from PRC for its newly built frigates and OPVs. Myanmar Navy Shipyard which is acquired from PRC in late 1990s is one of the most modern shipyards in the region. Many Myanmar naval engineers underwent shipbuilding training in PRC and Russia. They also acquired some tech from their biggest allied PRC.However Myanmar is very much interested in buying atleast one Type 54A for reserve engineering.

Light Frigates and FAC(Stealth)

In early 2011, two corvettes, 771 and 772, are upgraded to Light Frigates by installing C 802 SSM, SAMs, sonar, RBU 1200 ASW rockets and new surface and air search radars. The most significant development for Myanmar Navy is the launching of new FAC(Stealth)(pennant number P 491) which is 49 meter long and armed with 4 x C 802 SSMs and a single AK 630 CIWS. Second ship of this class is already under construction and expected to be completed by early 2014. Myanmar Navy plan to build 10 ships of this class. Twenty 45-meter class FACs(Guns and Missiles) are backbone of Myanmar navy but Myanmar Navy experienced these ships are too small for new weapons and electronic systems. This is the main reason for initiating of 49 meter class FAC(Stealth). Older Hainan class FAC (Submarine Chaser) will be degraded to Category B reserve by 2016.

Submarines

Myanmar Navy intended to establish a submarine fleet by 2015.Myanmar Navy is in the process of negotiating to buy 2 Kilo class submarines from Russia. In June 2013, during his visit to Russia, Myanmar Army chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Russian officials discussed to buy Kilo submarines and Kamov ASW helicopters for new frigates. Some Myanmar Navy officers are already in Pakistan for submarine training program.

Aung Zeya F 11 Frigates

Aung Zeya class possesses an enhanced striking power compared to the Anawrahta class in the form of Russia-supplied Kh-35E anti-ship missile with a 170 nautical mile range-more than double of that of the C-802. The OTO Breda 76 mm gun appears to have become the new standard medium-calibre gun in Myanmar Navy service. However, the frigate is armed with Russian-supplied AK-630 6-barrelled Gatling-type 30 mm CIWS. According to Jane’s Fighting Ships, the ship is equipped with a helicopter deck but no hangar facilities like the Anawrahta. For ASW, again the standard RBU-1200 mortars

The UMS Kyansittha is the first Myanmar Navy frigate that has reduced radar cross section features on its design. The ship incorporates various electronic suite and weaponry system from China and Russia, its two main allies. A total of at least 3 and as many as 6 ships of the class was said to be planned for service.These ships have hanger facilities and to be equipped with Kamov ASW helicopters.

Corvettes

There are 2 corvettes in Myanmar Navy F 771 and 772. Both corvette are commissioned in early 2000s. Theses corvettes undergone several modernization program. They were not fitted with any AshM and fitted oly with 2 x 76 mm Oto cannon each when they commissioned. However they are upgraded with C 802 in 2008. Again they received more modern C 802A, SA-N-5 and RBU 1200 along with new radars and sonars in 2012.

Decleared defence budget for 2014-15 is 2.39 bn USD. However actual spending may higher because the military of Myanmar is getting more than 500 hundred millions USD every year from the military-owned coopetations like MEC and UME which are not included in the defence budget.

I see, it's roughly 2.8-2.9 % of Myanmar's current GDP. Any current hostillities with the neighboring countries beside Bangladesh?

FAC (Missiles)

FACs (Missiles) are the back bone of Myanmar Navy. There are 16 FAC (Missilile) boats (6 x Houxin, 5 x Myanmar class, 6 x Mod Myanmar class) in Myanmar Navy. Myanmar Navy acquired 6 Houxin (Type 037 1G) missiles FAC in mid 1990s. These boats are the anti-ship version of the Hainan class submarine chaser armed with C 801 missiles. Myanmar Navy built 5 Myanmar class FACs which are armed with C802 between 2000 and 2004. 6 Modified Myanmar class FACs which are armed with C802A between 2005 and 2012.

Since 1998, the navy has built nine FACs. These FACs have a range of 4,500 miles (7,200 km) and were armed with 37 mm/30 mm cannons.

Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and many other naval forces in the region still have limits with their expenditure. I believe Unmanned Underwater Vehicles can be a valid solution (mine detection-anti submarine warfare) for less money. Thai military is planning to become a hub in the region and they have already started manufacturing USV and UUVs in Thailand!
