The 99th Anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli

Today We Remember the Fallen and We Celebrate Their Victory

In the 99th year marking the battle's anniversary, Turkey commemorated the fallen soldiers of the Battle of Gallipoli, which is remembered in the country on March 18 as Çanakkale Victory and Martyrs Day.

In the northwestern province of Çanakkale, a an official commemoration ceremony was held in front of Atatürk Monument. National Defense Minister İsmet Yılmaz, Çanakkale Governor Ahmet Çınar, Çanakkale Mayor Ülgür Gökhan and Strait and Garrison Commander Commodore Aydın Şirin placed wreath in front of the monument. The commemorating attended by thousands of people continued with a minute of silence and recital of Turkish national anthem. Some people also recited founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s address to youth during the commemoration.

Ceremonies are being held in all of the provinces in the country with various activities.

The Battle of Gallipoli was fought on land and sea at Gallipoli (Çanakkale in Turkish) during World War I. The British and French sought to take control of İstanbul as well as the Turkish straits to secure access to Russia. However, they were unsuccessful in their efforts and the campaign ended with heavy casualties on both sides -- and left the veterans with many stories to tell their descendants. According to Turkish sources, the Allies' total casualties were 187,000 soldiers while the Turkish causality was about 211,000 soldiers.

The Allied Navy failed to open the straits and to capture İstanbul. Both March 18th Naval Victory and the Gelibolu (Gallipoli) land victories restored the Turkish Army's prestige in the world and constituted a milestone in Turkish nation's struggle for independence.

There are still Aussies who are brainwashed by their teachers and war veteranist, back when I was in junior high, they made a film and project about it potraying them as "heroes" and what happened there *smh*. They will always have to accept the fact that they were whooped by Ottoman in Gallipoli. Even more awkwardly, they weren't alone travelling there.
