In 614 the
Sassanid Emperor Khosrau II ("Chosroes") removed the part of the cross held in Jerusalem as a trophy, when he
captured the city. Thirteen years later, in 628, the
Byzantine Emperor Heraclius defeated Khosrau and regained the relic from
Shahrbaraz. He placed the cross in Constantinople at first, and took it back to Jerusalem on 21 March 630.
