Thanks to RUSSIA : India in advanced stage of joining Wassenaar arrangement

India is in advanced stage of joining Wassenaar arrangement and the decision could come as early as Thursday in what would be an acknowledgment for Delhi's non-proliferation record.

"Wassenaar arrangement…, India could join, as the decision is being taken Wednesday and Thursday. The positive action could be taken tomorrow, fingers crossed. This is an example and reflection of Russia’s unwavering support to India’s membership of international nuclear control regimes," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey A Ryabkov told a select group of reporters after his meeting with Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar here on Wednesday.

"We discussed the issue of NSG and India’s prospective membership during the meeting. Russia is a firm and consistent proponent of India’s membership at control regimes. If everything goes as planned, we will see India being accepted in Wassenaar. We know the particular problems in further processing of India's NSG membership. Russia has been very supportive of india’s impressive and impaccable record in non-proliferation. It is different from some other countries that only speak of support, Russia takes steps to help and actions speak more than word. Difficulties still remain, we are speaking of this to everyone and the Chinese...Pakistan has applied for membership at NSG as well. We recognise the face that there is no prospect for any unanimity with respect to the Pakistani application so it is not possible to interlink these two," noted Ryabkov without mincing any words.

In July 2016 India joined Missile Technology Control Regime and has also applied for joining Australia group -- another export control regime. India’s export controls are in line with the Wassenaar Arrangement, one of the four non- proliferation regimes that prohibit the export of items of dual- use technology. In April rhe government came out with a Special Chemicals, Organisms, Materials, Equipment and Technologies (SCOMET) list.

The notification came into effect on May 1. Export of dual-use (which can also be used for proliferation purpose) items and technologies is either prohibited or is permitted under a license. In foreign trade policy, dual-use items have been given the nomenclature of SCOMET. Category six of the Scomet list now recommends the Wassenaar Arrangements munitions list and the Wassenaar Arrangement dual-use list items.

I doubt it will happen any time soon. But we should move ahead and start having deals with countries disregarding NSG. NSG will either have to acknowledge the reality or fade away into oblivion.
North korea has been busy firing rockets and busting atom bombs with help of its allies but there is nothing much world could do. When NSG cannot prevent nuke proliferation to NK then why should India be bothered with it. Lets cut deals with countries directly then every thing will fall into place on its own.

The survey is not helpful. Both are World Powers and we need both for "our purposes" which is rule of the politics. see that the Ego of both not hurt. and we are not the puppet of either country against other. Yes we can make them close to gather if possible or time needed subject to strength of our voice. the Import of weapons reduce from the Russia and moreover to shift in US is questionable. Need gov to gov contract instead Russian defence export company. (Rosobornexport). Conider that both are our friends, and we will never take the ones part against the other. We also need to see that we not go away for more distance from Russia, and not be part of any INTELIGENT GAME by country and their secreat services, who work behind curtain with the great power and strength. Russia need to built India's faith in their defence products and yes with good price.

On one hand Russia has been our staunch supporter for decades but nowadays with their economy in disarray they want to get more money out of us while delivering less. On the other hand USA has the most advanced weapons and a super power symbol but they consider Indians a competitor in many realms and want close relationship now since they are worried about China. Its like being between a rock and a hard place.

India is a large enough country to maintain good ties with both USA and Russia.Mindset of people is still stuck in old times.The world has changed.

It was obama who started the campaign for indias entry into NSG, WASSENAR and Australia group.
Russia now leads this campaign to get india included into Wassennar.
So its credit to both, and it will be not generous to not give credit to either of them.
Btw, its yet another heart attack moment for haters, china and israel have been trying to get into this group without any success.

Slow and steady wins the race. Hopefully positive outcome will come in favour of India.
We have really improved our status in International arena. We need not only USA and Russia but all countries together for getting our UNSC seat.
