  • Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Wednesday, former Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O’Neill said the virus had “brought out the best and worst of the Chinese model.”
Jim O’Neill, the chair of U.K. think tank Chatham House, on Wednesday commended the “fast, aggressive” Chinese response to the coronavirus outbreak, suggesting western countries should follow suit.

Speaking to CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Wednesday, the former Goldman Sachs chief economist said the virus had “brought out the best and worst of the Chinese model.”

On one hand, O’Neill said the dominance of President Xi Jinping and the diminished responsibility of officials in Wuhan, where the virus originated, may have enabled COVID-19 to initially spread quicker.

“That said — and it’s often like a lot of other things when China got hit with a crisis over the last 30 years — once they realized the scale of it, the system seems to be capable of dealing with it pretty quickly, relative to other places, and pretty decisively,” he added.

Chinese authorities shut down vast swathes of the country’s travel infrastructure and industrial production last month, causing a profound short-term shock to the Chinese and global economy. However, new cases of the virus in greater China have now slowed to a trickle, while Italy deals with a rapid escalation in new infections and a spiking death toll.

“Thank God this didn’t start in somewhere like India, because there’s absolutely no way that the quality of Indian governance could move to react in the way that the Chinese have done, that’s the good side of the Chinese model, and I think you could probably say the same about Brazil too.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a government meeting at the weekend and directed officials to identify suitable locations for quarantine facilities and make provisions for critical care. The number of cases in the country has now reached 50, according to the latest WHO figures.

The Indian government has also launched awareness campaigns and imposed a range of travel and visa restrictions in a bid to contain the virus. The Indian consulate in London did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

The former commercial secretary to the U.K. Treasury suggested that western governments dealing with outbreaks of their own, such as Italy and the U.K., should look to emulate China, South Korea and Singapore in the swift deployment of aggressive containment measures.

He also argued that finance and economic policymakers must begin treating health policy more seriously and think of it in the same way as other investment spending, and criticized the protectionist agenda of the U.S. and other nations on international trade.

“Unless we get rid of all forms of communication, we are globalized people and we need to think and learn from each other about the right solutions at any moment in time for all of us,” O’Neill concluded.

That’s low!

Question that needs asking - new pandemic category diseases are consistently originating from China. What is the root cause? What is China doing about it? If they are unable to manage, are they being transparent and seeking necessary assistance?

Who is going to repay lives and livelihoods lost?

Now those're some damn good questions.....obviously, no one will ask them since no one wants to "irritate" China....we already got Chinese members on PDF making useless threads 24/7 about the virus that deflect from the actual questions...

If any govt., especially those with trade & military relations or/& those dependent on China, ask such questions then they'll be faced with a cold shoulder unfortunately.

Well I can tell you the Indian figures are fake, they don't even have enough test kits and their health control is pretty much shit. You will see a huge increase when people start dying, but who cares right, they probably have more deaths from diarrhea.

.
We had something called Nipah virus spread from Bats in 2018. Our doctors identified it, we did not the threaten our doctors like imbeciles to shut them up, we informed the public, informed WHO, took steps, 17 died, 2000 were affected, state was quanrentined.

The only thing the world should have learnt from the Chinese was the things to keep secret and which things should not be kept secrets.

Since it's now a Pandemic and because anyone who got infected and cured can get reinfected.....Chinese handling of the issue hasn't been great....neither have the leaders and govt.'s around the world helped.....authoritarian or not...

Chinese can still get reinfected if the virus starts spreading again in multiple cities after being dormant.

Had everyone banned flights from/to China...the virus would have stayed in China...but no one wanted that because it hurt the Chinese ego (look up WHO's statements until yesterday when it got called a "pandemic").

So China is very much at fault here....more so than everyone else....including the corrupt WHO.

Until and unless an actual vaccine comes forward....everyone's doing a shitty job.
Eating live animals and uncooked/undercooked wild animals by Chinese on a large scale has led to this. And seeing their propaganda of the last few days , asking for apologies from others, they don't seem to have learnt anything.
Time for china to pay heavy compensation to all the effected people, else I support sanctions against them.

You are a highly uninformed person. Dont embarrass yourself and other Chinese here.

India reported the first infection 1 1/2 month ago. Since then we have 61 cases and 1 death. Almost all cases coming from outside India. Hardly 5 cases will be of people getting infected in India.

In 1 1/2 month of infection in China cases went to 1000s and deaths to 50+. All cases were infections caught in China.

Indians probably have the toughest immune system along with iron stomach...those who traveled there know what I mean.

coronavirus stands no chance against India.

Even after killing and eating eveything that crawls on earth, I suppose Chinese hadn't developed such iron stomach. It always causes troubles around the world. Please Chinese #sparelivingbeings

Nipah virus was hyper killer and not as infectious. I am gonna see what you gonna say now when you start testing ppl in India.

India should start testing ppl. Not testing equals no new cases. Lol

Buddy, please have some shame. You single handedly pushed world towards recession. No amount of reverse accusations will save you from utter stupidity in your eating habits. World is suffering because of it. So please be humble and take responsibility.

Indians are trying to avoid contacting something you created. Look at their utter despair that they even smearing themselves in cow dung. Please save us next time by eating responsibly.

We will start testing when we get patients with the symptoms. We can't go about picking people off the street to test them.
I doubt India will test people even if they have symptoms. You think your starving dalit spreading in the slums is gonna get. Tested? Hell India would be happy for the virus to Control population. You can't even control diarrhea, you expect me to blif you can control this virus? Lol
