Thai junta’s focus on school reforms raises eyebrows

That sounds bad. Yea it sounds like a western liberal society. I'm currently living in a western country and things here dont make sense to me either. The time kids interact with their parents are MUCH LOWER than the time kids spend at schools. Yet alot of parents dont allow school teachers to discipline their kids. Worst, teachers can be sued if they shout or use the wrong language against their students (students can say it's verbal abuse, insult, defamation that cause psychological damage, etc.) .... so that means no one really discipline these kids.

However, I do see mums that stay at home (housewives), even in rich urban area.

Elementary school kids? wow, this is the first time I've heard this kind of story.

I still think it's the fault of the parents. I think there need to be some radical law... like parents getting punished/prosecuted for crimes committed by their kids (even if it is just a fist fight) . Then, maybe they will beg the teachers to discipline their kids.

Do you have this kind of law in your country?

We don't have that kind of law..
Most of the parents in big city have profesional career ( husband and wife) So we can't watch our kids.

I personally support tiger teacher, student must be teached how to respect the teacher and elders also disciplined included..
But in indonesia, it's another way around, the teacher too afraid to give punishment or hurt the student, because they afraid their parents will bring a lawyer and cause them a deepshit

I'm afraid if our govt haven't act to reform the system, our next generation will lose competition and that's inevitable .

Majority of us in this forum isn't that poor but the majority of the people living in the cities have both parents working to make a living. Remember that we are a third world country.

Do you have this kind of law in your country?
No way. This kinda of law won't even pass in the Parliament. It's draconian. That would ruin your chances in the election. What the Thai military goverment did is a less extreme version. It might work?

I'm currently in NZ and it seems like they have this law where parents are punished for their kids action. Years ago, there were Police Commanders and politicians lobbying for their govt to prosecute parents of young criminal:

Youth gangs - 'make parents responsible'

I havent been here for long so I'm not sure what their current youth law is.

However, I do know that parents will be fined if their kids got caught for truancy:

Truancy parents face fine of $3000

Btw, I think the average income here is around $800 per week so a fine of $3000 for everytime their kid get caught is no joke!!

I'll be heading back to Aus soon and I can say that I feel NZ is A LOT safer than Aus during my short time here. The people seems more disciplined too.

I really hate this Western idea about not hitting children they are trying to push on the rest of the world. Yeah, child abuse is real. But when I used to get out of line in KG or early school, I got pulled up to the front of the class and got my hand smacked with a ruler. If I made trouble at home, I got smacked. If this didn't happen to me, I don't think I would have had any discipline.

I don't think you understand SEA politics, opposition will throw wrench at the government while the government make the opposition suffer as much as possible. You have almost zero cooperation. If you can't form 2/3 government, you will have a fail state.
