Thai junta envoy admits crush on China - The Nation

At a joint press conference in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn made a surprise declaration while standing on a podium with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

"If I were a woman I will fall in love with his excellency," he told reporters in English, much to the surprise of China’s top foreign envoy who appeared somewhat unsure how to respond.

The foreign ministers are currently attending a regional security meeting in Malaysia hosted by the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

General Tanasak, a close confidant of coup leader and now Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha, made his remarks in response to a reporter’s question on Thailand’s diplomatic relations with China.

"At this moment we believe this is the best time for our relationship. Especially for my personal contact with minister Wang Yi who is a very nice and polite person," he said.

It was then that he made his surprise declaration of love.

While Thailand boasts extensive cultural, ethnic and demographic links to China, its relationship has not always been so easy.

Throughout much of the Cold War the kingdom was one of Washington’s strongest bulwarks against communism and it has traditionally remained a close regional ally of the United States.

But the latest coup, one of more than a dozen successful power grabs by the military since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932, has soured relations with the US.

In contrast Beijing has been quick to embrace Bangkok’s new military rulers, with a flurry of high-level meetings since the May 2014 coup.

Tanasak said Thailand’s relationship with China goes back more than 1,000 years.

"Let’s say we are so close, we are more than friends, just say we are cousins with a long history together," he said.

"We don’t talk diplomatic talk, we talks like personal, like family, like friend," he added.

:smitten::rofl:

Good neighbors, good friends, good partners, good relatives

Do you know that Thai king Rama I was half Chinese? Then I bet all Thai shall be faked? Lol...
pure Chinese are 15% of Thai population, mixed may be more than 50%

I never said they were being sincere or that they are reliable. I simply admire their skill. You should admit they are on a different level from you.
Poor you. The thai have little scruple to change the cloth they wear. They say being your friend because they consider right now China as more powerful than America. Should China weaken tomorrow the thai will dump you like a dirty underwear.

You are free to admire them.

But maybe you are right. We should learn from the siamese: less scruple.

My viet brother, you know im always with vietnam on most issues. However i like being honest when exchanging views, in this case i must say im with my chinese friend @Raphael on this one.Thailand indeed is very good in maneuvering/playing geo politics with great powers. Its not easy for such a small country to be the only one in SEA to have avoid being colonised entriely by western powers/china or Japan in its modern history. Thai leaders have indeed been quite good in playing the game, thats exactly how it should be done. As far as your interest are served who cares? There is NO MORALITY/EGO in geo politics. Do what is best for your country, doesnt matter what others think . If vietnamese leaders were as smart as Thailand, i think they could have avoided some of the disastrous wars they encountered against big powers which set them back by decades and made other SEA overtake vietnam by miles. Making Vietnam one of the poorest countries in SEA and even Asia.

In short, dont ever allow your pride to take control of your foreign policy/interests, always be level headed and rational in your views and sometimes be even ready to make minor concesssions when necessary while looking at the big long term picture. :)
