Tesla rejected by India again, Pakistan may be a better choice

At the start of the New Year, the Indian government again rejected Musk's request to reduce tariffs on imported electric cars. It also means tesla has been denied access to The Indian market again this year.

Back in 2017, Musk captured the imagination of Indians by openly tweeting about his desire to enter the Indian market. Many Tesla fans in India have set up one Tesla club after another in the hope that Tesla will soon enter India.

However, Tesla faces a tough hurdle to cross when trying to enter the Indian market. In The Indian market, the import duty on cars below $40,000 is 60%, while the duty on cars above $40,000 is as high as 100%. Tesla currently has only one model under $40,000.

Indians are being asked to pay twice as much for A Tesla in a country where per capita income is less than a quarter of Chinese. How many Indians can afford a Tesla?

To gain access to the Indian market, Musk frequently lobbied Indian ministries to cut tariffs on imported cars to 40%.

India's transport minister has declared that Tesla wants access to the Indian market only if it manufactures in India. He also stressed that Tesla cars manufactured in China will not be allowed to enter India.

Tesla had delivered 930,000 vehicles worldwide in 2021, half of which had been made at its Gigafactory in Shanghai. India obviously wants such a gigafactory too. The Modi government has pledged to electrify more than 30% of private cars by 2030. However, of the 2.4 million cars sold in India in 2020, only 5,000 was electric.

Even with a population of 1.3 billion, it is questionable how many Indians can afford a Tesla.

In 2021, BMW, Mercedes and Audi sold more than 2.3 million cars in China compared to 33,000 in India.

General Motors, Ford, Fiat and Peugeot have pulled out. Renault and Skoda are also considering pulling out of India.

At the moment, the only foreign brand doing well in India is Suzuki. Suzuki, which sells well in India, saw its profit plunge 97.9 percent in the first fiscal year of 2020.

It's not just tariffs that are a headache for Tesla but also India's infrastructure and worker efficiency.

India is severely short of electricity. Some Indians joke that the occasional power supply always interrupts the blackout.

It was also a headache for Tesla owners to find charging points when they arrived in India. Therefore, some Indian experts analyzed that Tesla could only sell 150 cars per year in the first five years after entering the Indian market.

India has 1.3 billion people, but it is not a 1.3 billion market. India is more of a trap than an opportunity for Tesla.

Perhaps Pakistan is a better choice

Although Pakistan's population is not as large as India's, it has 200 million people and is a very potential market.

Pakistan has at least five advantages over India.

First, Pakistan has no shortage of electricity. The most important thing for electric cars is a steady power supply. Pakistan has completed a series of power projects with the help of China. Pakistan is a country with abundant electricity.

Second, Pakistan has low tariffs. The tariff on imported electric cars of Pakistan is only 10%, while the tariff on imported cars of India is 60-100%.

Third, roads in Pakistan are better. On the roads in India, you can often meet all kinds of animals such as cows, sheep, elephants. India's roads are potholed, excrement strewn and traffic jams are common.

Roads in Pakistan are much better than in India. Driving a Tesla in Pakistan is far more pleasant than driving in India.

Fourthly, there are few automobile companies in Pakistan market and there is a lack of competition. At present, Pakistan's car market is basically monopolized by three Japanese companies - Suzuki, Toyota and Honda. None of the three companies can compete with Tesla because they make mostly gas-powered cars.

Fifth, Pakistan's government is more friendly to foreign capital. Indian government is also very welcoming to foreign companies, but when they become big in India, Indian government will try to get rid of them and replace them with local companies.

The Indian government has violated market principles and cracked down on Chinese apps. Companies from other countries, such as Wal-Mart, have also suffered from unfair treatment by the Indian government.

In 2020, An Indian fan asked Musk on Twitter when Tesla could come to India. Master replied, "Next year for sure."Now it looks like Musk will have to reply again this year:"Next year for sure."

I think all countries should try to minimise personal car ownership in urban areas, or reduce it to ownership for leisure rather than commuting.

To really take advantage of electric vehicles we need to focus on electrifying public transport.

Have a single national network, trains, buses, taxis, rickshaws, where all drivers are salaried (so no more dodgy fares), all electrified, part nationalised and largely subsidised.

If we replace every petrol/diesel engine with a battery we'll soon run out of the REMS required.

Are they heck.

I returned from Pakistan last week. While travelling around between, Kashmir, Jhelum and Dina. it felt as though my back was going to break.

The road conditions had deteriorated so much over the past several years due to inadequate maintenance, it was unbelievable. Islamabad and Rawalpindi roads were good as always though.

I know India produces more electricity. But India's population is more than six times that of Pakistan. As a result, India is even more short of electricity than Pakistan.

A simple question, how many in Pakistan can actually afford this car to make a real difference and even then is your national grid rigid enough to supply demand of mass electric vehicles charging ?
Domestic and residential distribution systems are unssafe, have poor grounding/earthing, easily break down and over heat and well then there is load shedding.

The price of electricity is tied to fossil fuels too. I do not know how much of renewable percentage is in Pakistan but you will pay for the rise in fuel prices anyway.

It is the working class that will benefit from electric vehicles not the elite who just buy cuz they have the luxry to buy and own more than one car or full fill their desires.

Road infrastructure is not a problem and if you are selling your product in a country then do your homework. It is the government’s regulatory authority that needs to check the suitability and compatibility with the environment. This issue still persists with all current cars being sold in Pakistan. Just as an example , it is only now the people are looking at how many airbags does a car have. Some progress but not much because 2-4 seems to be good enough i but not really if you ask me.

Most importantly Pakistan should have some sort of MOT system ( this health checking system in UK ) to deem any vehicle road worthy.

In any case, you can buy a tesla even now but would you want to take it out to Pindi Saddar where the riskshaw drivers, bike riders and even other cars just have no common road sense.

Im not against Tesla coming to Pakistan but it has to be done right not just assembling. If Tesla did agree to limited mfg then this could open up so many avenues for mfg high end electric motors, electric drives, systems integration etc. Maybe a big challenge but if you achieve some percentage that would be massive for industry.

$40000 is 28 Lakh Indian Rupees. Which by all means is a premium price. It is logical to consider that an Indian who can pay such premium prices for a car should also be afford the hefty import duties.

And 'manufacture in India' is also a logical request/demand/condition.

India cannot just be a market to for foreign countries/businesses. India has to keep its interests in mind too. It is good that the current government is paying heed to Indian interests. Such 'issues' were unheard of during previous regimes.

BMW's and Mercedes have assembly plants in India; both of whom have 50-70% localisation of components and assembly of the engine across most of the models.

It wouldn't be fair to give special treatment to Tesla as these cars wouldn't even be accessible to the majority of the people.

Even Chinese manufacturer MG assembles it's EV in India in their Gujarat plant and it has become a very popular model in its class.

Why on earth should India or Pak care about Tesla? That guy is a freaking fraud, and people keep hyping his stock price like nothing. I can't say about Pak, but in India we need sub-20L good ranged EV's. I was looking at MG ZS EV, but even after I pay 25L, it only gets about 400KM (claimed range) and the interiors are not very good. Tata Nexon EV is cheaper, but is much lesser range. What India needs is an EV which will do 500KM on single charge at sub-20L price point. That may revolutionise the mid-size car market. Tesla whether it comes or not is pointless for India, only the super rich who have a 80L CTC will be able to make any sense for that car.

Pakistan should ask Elon musk to reduce the price of Tesla In return for reduce Tariffs. Ideas should be to reduce the dependence on oil.

Reduce profit margin and tariff low enough for people to start buying and getting rid of trash alto type vehicles.

Per capita wis etoo India produces more electricity.

Also tourist are talking about roads in Islamabad only.

Only if musk is willing to establish one of gigafactory with manufacturing in Pakistan instead of assembling in Pakistan.
