The police have disclosed that two M-16 assault rifles seized from two Eastern Indonesia Mujahidin (MIT) members killed in a police raid on May 24 were believed to have been made in the Philippines and the US.

Central Sulawesi Police chief Brig. Gen. Idham Azis said the words “made in the USA” and “made in the Philippines” were etched on the firearms.

“The illegal firearms are believed to have been smuggled from the Philippines through the sea route to Sulawesi,” said Idham.

M-16 rifles, added Idham, are a US-made weapon, but fakes are made in a number of countries, including the Philippines, for illegal activities such as terrorism.

Over the past week, police have arrested seven MIT members in a number of regions in Central Sulawesi.

Two of the seven men were killed in a raid in Poso regency on May 24. Police have also urged other members to surrender.

Is there any ASEAN regime or regulations in place that deal with weapons proliferations and state sponsorship of terrorism? Because terrorism is usually transnational, this strikes me as precisely the kind of thing that can't be dealt with bilaterally, but needs a regional focus.

Nope, it only exists on paper, besides that how capable ASEAN really is should have been clear during MH17 search mission and the current Rohingya crisis at sea.

There is also the chance that some of the fundamentalist groups sold the weapon, given that local terrorist groups here in PH use AR-15 derived weapons.

It is impossible that this pricey bag could be made outside of Italy....it says "Made in Italy" on it so it must be made in Italy. How could it be copied by some nation like China?? They would have to put a "Made in Italy" tag on it. That could NEVER happen...plus if they did it would be so easy to spot as a fake nobody would buy them....there would be a zero market for it. Everybody would happily pay the > $1000 price for a real one rather than < $100 for a fake one. Who would buy a cheaper one? I mean who?? Why would devious companies on this planet want to make a big margin by selling a fake one as genuine since there is simply no worldwide market for fake expensive handbags. I don't believe that happens...makes no sense.

M16's are also pricey. Why would some company want to make a fake one with a "Made in USA" tag on it. That makes no sense at all..impossible.

So the U.S. Government said "hey let's hand some guns to some terrorists to cause trouble in Indonesia...oh and don't forget to make sure the 'Made in USA' labels are on them in big letters...wouldn't want any confusion as to who is funding them. It's more trouble to ask the gun manufacture for some unlabeled ones than to handle an International Incident that could put our SCS plans in jeopardy"

BTW I'm sure companies like Norinco have a valid license from the U.S. Government to make M16's (just like those Gucci handbag clone companies do) ...it's not like they are doing anything wrong to begin with...so why would they risk that license by doing something underhanded?

err, actually the situations when US made rifles and other type of small arms fall into terrorist and drug gangster is not a new case here especially in South East Asia.

As is mentioned in the OP smugglers could be bringing in M16's from the Phillipines (which are standard issue in their army) and even old Vietnam era ones (or from non licensed companies)

Did you even read your own link, it's easy to tell the difference, since it's not exactly the same, just as those "Gucci" bags, or fake Rolexes.

It's too expansive for "Rolex" and "Gucci" to be made as the original, not to mention difficult, and it's a slightly different design than the American rifle.

You obviously have no experience with these expensive things or the women who carry them.

It was not uncommon that US soldiers in foreign countries traded some weapons for money. They have done that in Iraq and Afghanistan like a regular business. In fact, Afghan opium trade is said to have been managed and thrive under US military's protection.

South East Asia is not foreign to weapons sourced from the US either through mercenaries or corrupt US generals or soldiers.
