BEIJING: Terrorists from the northwest Xinjiang had targeted the venue of the Olympic Games and an aircraft belonging to the China Southern Airlines, Chinese officials said on Sunday.

The plans to attack the Olympic venue were revealed in a raid at Urumqi, the regional capital, which resulted in the killing of two suspected terrorists in January end.

Wang Lequan, a senior Xinjiang official said that materials seized by the police during the raid showed that terrorists had planned to "specifically to sabotage the staging of the Beijing Olympics."

The Chinese government is cagey about discussing any issue that can cause bad publicity to the Summer Games. This is what makes this statement by Wang significant.

Xinjiang separatists are not known to have ventured in the Chinese capital so far. The government had earlier said earlier described terrorism as a major threat to the Games. But this is the first time that a Communist Party leader has revealed concrete plans by militants to target the Games venue.

Nur Bekri, chairman of the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, told reporters that "some people were attempting to create an air disaster." in a China Southern Airlines plane, which was forced to land was forced to land in the north-western city of Lanzhou on Friday.

The crew decided to land the plane after it foiled the attempt to cause air disaster, he said. He did not mention that the people causing trouble in the plane came from Xinjiang.

"Who the people involved in the incident were, where they were from, what their aim was and what their background was, we are now investigating," he said.

The flight arrived in Beijing on Saturday. There were no injuries. He had yesterday called for an intensification of the crack down on "evil forces" in the region.

The Xinjiang police killed two suspected militants and arrested 15 others in a raid in the regional capital of Urumqi last month.

Earlier reports had said that police found guns, homemade bombs, training materials and "extremist religious ideological materials" during the raid in Urumqi. But there was no mention of an attempt to attack the Olympic venue in earlier reports.

The Chinese government is worried that Xinjiang separatists, some of whom are fighting for creation of an independent country under the name of East Turkmenistan, attract a lot of attention among non-government organisations and the media in western countries. The government's attempts to put down the separatist movement have been drawing criticism in the West for its repressive measures

Security will be tighter than previous Olymics, AQ has a history of playing mind games and an international event like the Olymics will serve their goal well.
Chinese are educated people, even if the terrorists succeed in an assualt the muslim population will condemn it.

Nice comment.

Muslim brothers since when? Since when did you start affiliating terrorists with Muslim brotherhood? Its like the likes of you supporting the genocide in Gujrat.

Learn the difference between Al-Qaida (others financed by the Indians) and the righteous ones.

:P

What I was trying to say, is that muslims and especially Pakistanis, have been ignoring the Chinese muslims and their "struggle". The silence is quite loud.

I would have expected an uproar against the fact that atheists are subjugating the local muslims.
Atleast Hindus believe in god, but communists are godless people!

One reason might be, that there is no "unfinished business" in China for the fundamentalists. Their attention is riveted on europe and india, two regions that have seen Islamic empires in the past.

Al Qaeda financed by indians? Al Qaeda hates India. Al Qaeda hates anyone who is not a muslim (except maybe their arms dealers). Now why in the world would India finance Al Qaeda, knowing that our money will be used agianst us, probably in kashmir.

Nur Bekri must develop economy well, today, many Uyghur farmers are poor,Uyghur university and college students can't find good job, because many of them can't speak Mandarin, they only can work in Xinjiang.
Nur Bekri want to develop a educate systerm, two language educate, let Uyghur students can speak Mandarin and Uyghur language, then they can work in inner China, they will have more chancrs to find good jobs. Some Uyghurs are worring about Uyghur forget Uyghur language,so this systerm must focus on Uyghur language

Please create a relevant thread to discuss Pakistani affiliations with Muslims all over the world.

I think you've been sufficiently warned about talking about topics all over the place.

I apologize. Yeah... I do tend to go off on a tangent occasionally.

Olympics will be safe, amid 'terrorism' threats: organisers

BEIJING - THE Beijing Olympics will be safe for tourists, organisers insisted on Monday, a day after Chinese officials raised alarm bells by reporting two 'terrorist' plots had been foiled.
'From the beginning we have attached great importance to Olympic security,' said Sun Weide, a spokesman from Beijing's Olympic Organising Committee (BOCOG). 'We are confident that we will be able to have a safe Olympics.'

He gave no indication as whether there were any new measures in place since the announcement of the latest alleged plots.

Wang Lequan, the Communist Party chief in the northwestern Xinjiang region, said on Sunday a January raid on 'terrorists' that resulted in the deaths of two militants and 15 arrests had foiled a planned attack directed at the Games.

He offered few further specifics of the alleged plot.

It was the first specific threat against this summer's Olympics to be reported by authorities, although Chinese officials have repeatedly warned of the terrorist threat to the Games.

The alleged plot was the second foiled attack linked to Muslim separatists in Xinjiang to be announced over the weekend.

Passengers on a China Southern Airlines flight on Friday attempted to crash the airliner flying to Beijing from Urumqi, capital of the region, an official from the region said on Sunday.

As in the first case, few details have emerged.

China has repeatedly warned of terrorism threats from Muslim separatists in Xinjiang.

But the dearth of information in the latest cases raised suspicions as to whether they were being used as an excuse to crackdown on dissent before the Olympics, Phelim Kine, Asia researcher with New York-based Human Rights Watch, told AFP.

'We're concerned that the Chinese government may use these alleged terrorist plots as a pretext for a new campaign of repression against the Uighur population in Xinjiang and to stifle any public expressions of dissent in Xinjiang ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games,' he said. -- AFP

Why would the Uighurs want to separate from China? Surely they can't do better on their own than with China. China will bring them more prosperity than they can get on their own.

I'm sure the 'terrorists' have little support amongst most of the Uighur population. It seems from the posts by Chinese members here that there is a language issue in that region which is why there is a seperatist movement.

.
Only a few Uyghurs want to separate from China, most of them don't.But many of them think their lives are worse than other Chinese
Many Uyghur criminals took Uyghur kids as thieves in Inner China, that's a serious problem. Many inner Chinese had stolen by those kids,so they don't trust Uyghurs.

There is no place in my post where I said Al-Qaida is financed by the Indians.. I was reffering to others like them.. i.e Mehsuds, BLA, etc..
