Terror attack thwarted at Karachi Naval Dockyard

If you are implying India, dont you think we would want the terrorists to try and attack your nuclear assets? What is more strategic for Pakistan than those?

So come out of the mist of illogical nationalistic jingoism and open your self to alternate theories as well. What do terrorists want ? Max publicity.. What kind of attacks give them those? Attacks on Pakistani military assets. Because attacks on civilians have become so routine that most News papers have even stopped reporting them.

Sometimes things are as simple as they seem

I do agree terrorists want maximum publicity about their twisted cause. But one can't wonder why does India need so many consulates in Afghanistan. Anyway the blame lies mainly on weak Pakistani rulers who are idiot enough to first train and arm terrorists. Obviously when Pakistan cut their funding they looked for someone else to fund them so it would not be surprising that India with the help of Afghan intelligence agencies are funding some groups in Pakistan.

India does what's in its interests. Pakistani Establishment does what's in its interest and it may not be in the interest of Pakistan itself.

one arrest led to more
indeed 4 were arrested on site and grilling them led to the arrests from different parts of the country

I just hope atleast these terrorists get sentenced by Pakistani courts. The past record is absolutely dismal. And I am not even referring to the terrorists targeting India. Even the ones found to be hitting Pakistan have been let go many times

Brazen assault: PNS dockyard attackers had ‘inside support’

KARACHI:
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif on Tuesday hinted at the possible involvement of some navy personnel in the botched Sept 6 attack at the PNS Dockyard amid responsibility claims by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and fresh details emerged.

The minister made the revelation on a point of order during the joint session of the parliament. He added that ‘other elements’ could also be involved in the brazen attack that had left two terrorists and a petty officer of the navy dead. “An investigation is under way. I’ll get back to the house with details on Wednesday,” he told the lawmakers.

Four terrorists were also apprehended in the operation,” navy officials said, adding that the terrorists wanted to penetrate the dockyard where naval vessels are docked.

“The attackers got onto PNS Zulfiqar which was docked at the Pakistan Navy berth,” a navy official close to the matter told The Express Tribune. “A sentry saw a suspicious movement on the ship. He raised alarm before he was shot and injured by the attackers. A petty officer rushed to the site but was immediately shot down,” he added.

Commandos from the Special Services Group (SSG) were called in immediately who engaged the terrorists in a gunfight, the official said. “It took the SSG commandoes two hours to complete the operation, he added. “However, the combing of the area continued for another six hours.

PNS Zulfiqar is the first of the F-22P series of medium-sized warships jointly built by Pakistan and China about four years back. About 20 more ships and submarines of the Pakistan Navy were docked at the time of the attack, but the terrorists chose PNS Zulfiqar, perhaps because it came in their way first, the official said.

He claimed that the terrorists came by the sea, raising questions about the vigilance of the Pakistan Navy and Pakistan Coast Guards who are responsible for the security in Pakistan’s territorial waters.

“The place where the attack took place is one of the highest security zones of the Pakistan Navy,” he said, adding that an inquiry was under way to find out how the terrorists evaded security and why PNS Zulfiqar was picked for the attack.

Inside support

Sources said that investigators have not ruled out possible involvement of navy employees. In view of confirmed ‘inside support’ for earlier major attacks on military targets, investigators have started keeping a check on the staffers’ cellphones and their movements. In most of the major attacks, including the one at PNS Mehran base, GHQ and Kamra airbase, investigators pointed towards inside support.

In the 2009 GHQ assault, the army had detained Brigadier Ali Khan, who was serving at the military headquarters in Rawalpindi, for his alleged ties to a pan-Islamic extremist group. Similarly, defence officials had informed a parliamentary committee in June 2011 that insiders were involved in the PNS Mehran base siege in Karachi. Subsequently, three navy officers were court marshaled and sentenced.

Moreover, three low-ranking officers of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) were arrested in connection with the August 16, 2012 Taliban attack on the PAF airbase Minhas at Kamra.

AIG son’s involvement

In another startling revelation, AIG Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo said that evidence also pointed to the possible involvement of Ovais Jakhrani, son of AIG Ali Sher Jakhrani.

Ovais, who had left the navy four months ago, told his family on Sept 5 that he was going to Islamabad to take CSS exams. However, his body was recovered from the sea at the PNS Dockyard on Sunday, triggering speculation that he might have been kidnapped and murdered. “He [Ovais] was not kidnapped,” AIG Thebo told The Express Tribune. “Circumstantial evidence suggests that he was involved in the assault.”

He added that naval authorities were investigating and the police would register an FIR if and when the navy approached them. AIG Jakhrani, who is on Hajj operations duty in Saudi Arabia, received a phone call from an anonymous person on Monday telling him his son had been killed for non-payment of ransom money and that the body had been dumped into the sea. The family visited an Edhi morgue the same day to collect the body. DNA tests are being conducted to confirm his identity.

“We were shocked to learn that Ovais could be involved in the dockyard attack,” a relative toldThe Express Tribune.

TTP claims responsibility

The TTP claimed that it carried out the attack with help from within the navy. “The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claims responsibility for the attack on the Karachi Dockyard,” the group’s spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid told media persons by the phone from an undisclosed location on Tuesday.

Shahid also claimed “some support within the navy who helped” in the attack. He had earlier stated that he would release details of the attack but he could not share any more. Surprisingly, the Taliban claim of responsibility came late like the confirmation of the attack by the navy’s spokesman. Usually, the group claims immediately claims credit for its attacks.

Attackers of Pakistan Navy Dockyard wanted to hijack PNS Zulfiqar

Karachi- Attackers who attacked Pakistan Navy Dockyard in Kemari Karachi wanted to hijack PNS Zulfiqar, according to sources.

Crack down has been started on the identification of terrorists while 17 accused have been arrested from Interior Sindh, Larkana and Jacobabad.

First time it surfaced up that Sindhi Jihaddies were involved in important installation. Former Officer of Pak Navy Awais Jakhrani was also among the attackers. At the night of September 6 security forces failed the plan of terrorists and dockyard remained safe.
Investigative sources told that in uniform terrorists fired hundreds of bullets and used hand bombs, the weapon recovered from terrorists were the same as used in PNS Mehran and Karachi Airport attack. Weapons have been sent to Islamabad for forensic test.

Sources told that Awais Jakhrani son of AIG Inspection Karachi Police Ali Shair Jakhrani was also involved in the attack. Awais Jakhrani departed from his house for Islamabad 2 days earlier but died in the dockyard attack, sources told that he had also links with banned organization. Statements of Security staff and injured personnel during operation have been recorded.

On the other hand Docks Police told that the case of the attack has not been registered. Police took the stance during investigation that when it was asked after the blasts on PNS Dockyard it was replayed that exercises are continuing. Scrutiny process of Navy personnel has been started while the whole group has been identified during the investigation from arrested terrorists.

Terror attempt: Pak Navy broadens scope of investigation

KARACHI: A number of Navy officers deployed at Pak Navy Dockyard have been included into the scope of investigation following the shocking terror bid at the facility which was successfully foiled by the Navy commandoes.

According to sources, the above decision was made after the terrorists made a botched attempt to gain control of the Navy’s defence assets at the Dockyard.

The terrorists in collusion with some officials of the Navy had made an attempt to hijack one of its ships laced with missiles. On witnessing a timely action by the naval commandoes, the terrorists clad in Navy uniforms opened fire. As a result, many Navy personnel and staff sustained injuries.

Meanwhile, a dead body of the son of a senior Sindh police officer was also recovered from the sea near the Dockyard. The deceased was later identified as Naval officer Owais Jakhrani.

The mystery surrounding the death of Owais Jakhrani has not yet been solved, as police and Navy sources are reluctant to share any information on what led to the death of the Naval officer.

On the other hand, the defence analysts are of the view that had the terrorists been successful in their nefarious designs it could have plunged Pakistan into a serious internal and external crisis.

Credentials of more than 200 Naval personnel have so far been screened by Pakistan Navy as part of the ongoing scrutiny following the failed attempt of terrorism.

I think catching them red handed while in the act of terrorism is prof enough to send them to hell instantly.

.
1. What did they want to do with F-22P? Could they have launched / used any of its weapons? If so, they must have wanted to black-mail the government. Could it be that they might have wanted to release prisoners in different jails? I can not think of anything else.

2. It is worrisome sign that the son of a prominent Sindhi civil servant was found to be involved. Sindhis are typically anti-militancy. Some researchers had raised the possibility of Sindhis joining cadres of militant organizations. Such involvement is worrisome.

3. Navy needs to be more vigilant. The militants must not get another opening.

4. If it is not Taliban, then could this be something like ISIS? That might explain delayed 'acceptance' by Taliban. There are some indications of ISIS inspired propaganda in Baluchistan. Organizations like LeJ & SSP might have linkages with ISIS elements.

no sir there is no such chance.
according to a friend of mine who is serving officer involved in the latest operation. when his team captured a terrorist ring leader , the guy told them that he will be free like 2 times before.

the courts and Sherifs consider religious and sectarian organisations as their trump card against Pakistan army. one judge declared that a failed suicide bomber is innocent even if he is captured with suicide vest and even if he tries to detonate and his bomb fails
he can only be considered a terrorist if he manages to explode himself.

or a different but loosely related news
whenever there are news about the killing of Hindu or Sikh community members in Pakistan there is a thread opened and there are valid condemnations and anguish shown by Indian members and I share the feelings. e.g. recent killing of an innocent Sikh in KPK province.

hence I like to point out that his killers are the same who kill and behead our soldiers and their leaders are guests of Afghan intelligence. now we cant expect anything better from Northern Afghans, their animosity dates back to centuries. but do watch out that helping such entities for short term gains against Pakistan will blow back in longer run against India. refer to Al Zawahiris recent Indian chapter announcement.
(a very routine lesson delivered to us for our Afghan jihad involvement in 80s).

coming back to this attack and other similar attacks I will like to refer to our tensions and troops movements along the border as well. where these terrorists have tried to instigate a war between India and Pakistan. I dont expect much but at least at a token level start sharing information against those who consider both states as their enemies and dream to have chaos like Iraq so that they can operate freely

by the way while we are at it an

Dear FATMAN,

As far as I have come to know from people close inside, Alhamdulillah, major damage has been averted due very timely actions. It was a major conspiracy involving foreign powers . No material damage except for the death of 01 x Petty Officer has been caused

.
- tbh, this is the LOL moment, with reports concerned with Mr. Owais - the guy left home to take CSS exam , idiots the exams for CSS are in Feb 2015, and being a son of civil Servant his family would have known this, so even if he lied, they would have caught his lie --- one possible theory is he left home to join one of the academies down here in Islamabad -- actually we have few good academies for CSS preparation --- but why come all the way from karachi to islo, when same academies have their campus in Karachi ----

one more point to consider is - this guy had no bullet wound and as per autopsy, he died of drowning - also note that his dead body has been handed back to the family - had he been the terrorist - Mr. SSP would have been suspended by now and under scrutiny or detained --- but that did not happen and the guy had been buried -- so what was he doing on the night of attack - say , he was lured into the group - BUT he might have refused to be a part of the attack hence he was forced --- once Militants got what they wanted from him - brought them to the site - he was thrown into the sea ----

OR , when they started taking retaliatory fire from navy, they killed the dude who could comprise their position ---

-- Now lets talk about, who attacked the dock, it could be Sindhi Jihadi, BUT, those guys lack the balls, i have lived and worked in the area, looking at the past record, patterns, these guys lack the discipline, the equipment and the planning --- so it cant be Sindhis - Unless some help was provided from across the border -- Yes, India , we killed their pawns in NWA, we crushed them in Balochistan, and we have limited them to a certain area in Balochistan, also they lack the resources --- the only possible network left is of Sindhi Separatists ---

-- what was the motive? well many have said that it was hostage negotiation - well if you are after hostage negotiation, why the heck not raid a building and take hostage, why go to the limit of taking over F22p, - unless you want to destroy the asset - or use it to launch an offensive - one or the other way ----

these are my theories-- agree with them or not :D

i guess navy has not learned its lesson even after we lost the great asset like P3c Orion ----
anyhow about the highlighted part - one thing about LeJ is these guys only provide the network support - like using their network to move the attackers from one place to the other city --- they are usulayy involved in Targetted killings of Shias, they dont involve themselves with Terror attacks --but since they have a vast network of seminaries across the country , hence many militants use that network for support be it TTP, or AQ ----

BLA, BLF lack the capacity, if you recall some balochi organization claimed the responsibility for Islamabad sabzi mandi attack and i had said the same back then, it was not balochis and they are lying --- and I was right, they couldnt plan a bomb blast let alone an attack on Military Installation --

I just recalled that Defense Minister has stated that at least one of the people arrested has links with NWA. So there's the link.

.
Addressing the joint session of Parliament, the defence minister revealed details about the attack, saying that three miscreants were killed and among them was an ex-Naval officer who was discharged in May last year.

Expressing concern over revealing details about the incident as this may jeapordise investigation, Asif remarked that it was an isolated incident.

He also stated that the attack was a blowback of the ongoing military operation in North Waziristan.

“It was a successful operation as all the attackers were either killed or arrested,” the minister stated, revealing that seven of the miscreants were under custody.

He further stated that no damage was done to any of the installations.

Asif also revealed that four 30-bore pistols, five 9mm pistols, two satellite phones, four suicide jackets, two detonators, 24 handcuffs and seven religious books were recovered from the attackers.

The minister also said that several of the security personnel were injured while trying to foil the attack, adding that a petty officer was also killed.

P.S - No AKs? , but handcuffs - so may be after hostages
