The terror attack on a police station at Dinanagar in Punjab has raised fears of a shift in infiltration from the Line of Control (LoC) to the International Border (IB) and revival of terrorism in Punjab after over two decades. While it is still not clear from where the terrorists sneaked in, they are believed to have come from across the border.

This follows a recent trend of a decrease in infiltration in Kashmir as security forces have put in place a multi-layered intelligence grid and increase in attacks across the IB.

Lt. General Syed Ata Hasnain, former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 and 21 Corps, said this was an attempt by Pakistan to probe the defences to find new route for infiltration. “Infiltrating into the Valley has become increasingly tough due to the intelligence grid in place and better coordination between the Army and the Border Security Force. The stretch from Jammu to Pathankot is easier to infiltrate. The National Highway is very close. From there one can take a vehicle and carry out attacks on multiple targets,” he said.

Lt. Gen. Hasnain also noted that since 2014 there has been a shift in infiltration from the LoC to the IB in Jammu and downward to Punjab, and this is part of that strategy.

An Army officer, who served in Samba sector, said infiltration happens at night through the several nullahs that dot the landscape, and infiltrators are usually pushed in without any terrain maps and it is very much possible that they may have lost their way into Punjab while crossing into Jammu.

Official sources said that intelligence inputs on July 24 warned that 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were trying to infiltrate from Dudhiniyal in Jammu to carry out attacks in India on August 15 or before actively aided by the Pakistan Rangers with the Inter-Services Intelligence coordinating the efforts. But this advisory was not specific to Punjab.

Union Cabinet condoles loss of lives in Gurdaspur attack | Zee News

New Delhi: Union Cabinet on Tuesday condoled the death of the Punjab police personnel and civilians who lost their lives in the Gurdaspur terror attack.

Sources said a resolution was also adopted at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard.

In a major terror attack, three fidayeen, believed to have come from Pakistan, had yesterday attacked passengers in a moving bus and stormed a police station, killing seven persons, including an SP, while all the terrorists were gunned down after a day-long operation.

In the pre-dawn attack, the terrorists, suspected to be members of either Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) or Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), in army fatigues first targeted a roadside eatery, then sprayed bullets on a passenger bus and later barged into the Dinanagar police station.

CHANDIGARH: The unidentified gunmen, who opened fire on a bus and a police station in Gurdaspur are suspected to be from Pakistan.

It is believed that they infiltrated into the country from neighbouring Hiranagar area of Jammu, entered Punjab near Pathankot and are possibly LeT or Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants.

However, the possibility of infiltration having taken place along the Punjab-J&K border, South of Hiranagar, cannot be ruled out as there is no fencing along that stretch of the border.

A senior official said, “There are several riverine areas along the international border(IB) that are easy to cross. The swollen Ravi and the grassy terrain facilitate movement. In addition to this, the BSF is forced to retreat from their posts in these areas as they become inundated.”

Intelligence inputs suggest that the attackers could have come from Narowal in Pakistan, which is a known training base for terrorists, sources said.

One suggestion from me, why not create a India Pakistan Friendship thread, which could be "Featured" / "Sticky".

Many people from both sides and on this forum do not wish any harm. But being a defense forum, there are so many war mongering people. They vitiate the atmosphere while no one talk about good things.

Just few days back there was a thread of Pakistani child. That was a great example of humanity and how alike people are on both sides. There have been numerous such examples on both sides.

Why not also use this forum for some positive things?

Gurdaspur: The three terrorists who created mayhem here yesterday before being eliminated were caught on a CCTV camera whose footage surfaced on Tuesday in a significant development in the attack case.

The 14-second video footage shows three men, wearing Army, having big backpacks and carrying AK assault rifles, walking down the road at 4:55 a.M. Yesterday.

The images were captured by a CCTV camera placed at a shop at Taragarh intersection in Dinanagar area, just before they entered this Punjab town bordering Pakistan, SSP Gurdaspur G S Toor said today.

During investigations, it emerged that the terrorists unsuccessfully tried to snatch a mini truck (tempo) from its driver and then opened fire on a moving bus, Toor said.

A man heading to buy vegetables in his Maruti car became their target. The car owner Kamaljit Singh said they pulled him out of his vehicle and threw him on the road.

Earlier this morning, Punjab police defused two grenades seized near the operation site at Dinanagar police station complex.

Seven people, including an SP, were among killed in yesterday's terror strike that lasted around 12 hours.
