The move to cancel the tender is a big setback for China as a Chinese joint venture, CRRC Pioneer Electric (India) Pvt Ltd, was the only foreign bidder among the six contenders to supply 44 sets of semi-high speed train

New Delhi:

India has cancelled a tender for making 44 semi-high speed "Vande Bharat" trains, the Railway Ministry said on Friday night. It said a fresh tender will be floated within a week and give preference to the centre's Make In India programme.

The move to cancel the tender is a big setback for China as a Chinese joint venture, CRRC Pioneer Electric (India) Pvt Ltd, was the only foreign bidder among the six contenders to supply 44 sets of semi-high speed train.

"Tender for manufacturing of 44 nos of semi high speed train sets (Vande Bharat) has been cancelled. Fresh tender will be floated within a week as per Revised Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) order," the Railway Ministry tweeted.

The joint venture was formed between China-based CRRC Yongji Electric Company Ltd and Gurugram-based Pioneer Fil-Med Pvt Ltd in 2015.

The railways is keen to ensure that a domestic firm takes the tender and once it was felt that the Chinese joint venture was a frontrunner for the project, it was scrapped, news agency PTI reported quoting unnamed sources.

The Indian Railways' Integral Coach Factory in Chennai had floated the tender on July 10.

The other five bidders were Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Bharat Industries, Sangrur, Electrowaves Electronics Pvt Ltd, Medha Servo Drives Pvt Ltd, and Powernetics Equipment India Pvt Ltd, according to the Railway Ministry.

India has tightened trade ties with China after border tensions escalated to a violent face-off in eastern Ladakh in June. India lost 20 soldiers, while Chinese casualties were over 40, according to reports.

India has responded in a multidimensional way, from using diplomatic pressure with friendly nations to banning imports of Chinese products such as solar power equipment. The economic backlash extended to blocking 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, which had a massive user base in India.

The railways has already scrapped a tender for thermal cameras meant for COVID-19 surveillance after Indian firms alleged that the tender specifications favoured a Chinese company. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd too cancelled a ₹ 470-crore contract with a Chinese firm days after the border clash in mid-June.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the Vande Bharat train on the Delhi-Varanasi route on February 15 last year. The second train service between Delhi and Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Katra was flagged off by Home Minister Amit Shah on October 3 last year.

I admire India's commitment to staying poor if the alternative is getting rich with Chinese help. You have my full support, I want India to remain poor.
That's exactly what happens when you read only the headline and douse us with your unwanted and needless opinions. That tender will now go to some Indian company, thus creating some more jobs.

We are not like other poorer countries you try to economically colonize. Congratulations on loosing a large market right next to you. Like wise, we love these moves.

Maybe we would prefer poverty to Chinese "help" ?
I know this train 18 case. Its a total internal power struggle between the mechanical and electrical departments of the Indian railways.
The 2 successful train 18s are running trouble free from the last 1 year. But these were manufactured by the mechanical department of railways without involving the electrical. The electrical propulsion part was done by a private supplier. The electrical department was determined to ruin this train as they were sidelined and raised energy efficiency and corruption charges against the mechanical department.
After the initial 2 proof of concept indigenous trains, 40 new trains were to be procured. The other MNCs did not respond because the tender is for the electrical propulsion system mainly, while the Chinese did.
Since the Chinese had the lowest bid and no chance of Chinese getting government orders , the tender has been cancelled.
With a 4th tender now , we are losing 3 to 4 years to get new sets because of untamed egos in the railways.
The minister should have cracked the whip and told them to increase the energy efficiency inhouse, since the initial 2 trains are running bug free.

A rich India is bad for everybody. We have seen their global vision ... which is the enslavement of White people (a la historical role reversal). Imagine what they would do to Muslims by then. IMO China and the rest of the world should withdraw all investment from India immediately and just let it stay in the stone age.

As with Pak, select China entities face extra visa scan
An official note received by the Ministry of External Affairs lists “Entities of Concern” and states that “in order to closely monitor the activities in India, Visas sponsored by Entities of Concern shall require prior security clearance”.

Amid heightened tensions along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh, the Centre is reviewing the presence of China's Confucius Institutes in universities, media reports have said.

The reports have sparked a prompt reaction from China, which has asked India to "avoid politicising normal cooperation and maintain healthy and stable development of China-India people-to-people and cultural exchanges."

The screws they are tightening.

Hehehe... loan ka arrangement ho gaya? For repayment of LOAN... tender cancel karne se paise bhi bachenge...

We are a poor nation... and China is the only nation to provide LOAN to us... so yes, snubbing them will turn us into a beggar state...

I do agree with your post :p

P.S.: China has made SRI Lanka, Maldives and Pakistan rich... and Pakistani FM is currently in China to discuss how to distribute LOANS to remaining world...
