Tel Aviv protester raps PM as ‘Traitor-Yahu’ as 5th rally draws thousands

. . . . . . .
and NONE of the mainstream media is covering this! What rubbish! How can one say that western media is not controlled by zionist?

So true, not a single peep about this on any of the US MSM. Looks like all these Israelis protesting are doing it peacefully and it's also intermittent, so it's not every day in a row which is bizarre. It loses steam that way and of course, peaceful protests with lack of violence will hardly get you any coverage in the media.

I think protestors need to burn something to be noticed on MSM.

eh you are right. without violence there will be no media coverage but still media must give at least an impression that people are not happy with netanyahu. It feels like everything is okay, people are happy in israel lets focus on iran, pakistan.

Why is the Western media not talking about the anti-govt protests in Israel?

While protests in Iran get widespread coverage in the global media, similar recent anti-government protests in Israel were ignored for obvious reasons
Iran and Israel may be the two worst enemies in the Middle East. Yet they have, in the last month of 2017, witnessed a common––and somewhat unusual––type of street protests by their own citizens. The demonstrators in both the countries urged their respective governments not to use the alibi of external enemies to shift attention from the problems within. So far 15 people, including a police official, have been killed in Iranian protests.

While protests in cities like Mashad, Kermanshah, Tehran, etc. got widespread coverage in the global media, the one in Israel––no less unique in character––received less space for obvious reasons.

US President Donald Trump was quick to tweet in favour of protestors in Iran, prompting its President Hassan Rouhani to say: “Anyone who calls the Iranian people terrorists does not have the right to sympathize with the people.”

He, however, in a statement on December 31, conceded, “Iran is a free nation, and according to the constitutional laws, the people have the right to express their criticism and protest.”

But, Rouhani said that the aim of these protests should be to improve the situation in the country and people’s lives.

In Iran, people opposed to spiritual leader Ayatollah Khamenei are demanding the leadership to withdraw from Syria and Yemen, and concentrate on the condition of the people within the country.

Years of sanctions have been blamed for the present condition in Iran.

On the other hand, in Israel, people took to streets on all Saturdays of December in cities like Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa to protest rampant corruption in the country, especially those cases involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

On December 23, rallies in three cities saw the participation of more than 10,000 people, including of many rightist supporters of the ruling Likud Party.

Strangely, while speaking at the Jerusalem rally, former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said that corruption “is a greater danger [to Israel] than the Iranian threat, Hezbollah, Hamas, or the Islamic State.”

This was something extremely surprising from an Israeli former minister, who had served as the Chief of the Staff of Israeli Defence Forces. In about 38 years of his life in the army, he had fought Iranian-backed Hezbollah and Palestinians––besides taking part in the Yom Kippur War of 1973 and Lebanese invasion during the early 1980s. As late as May 20, 2016, he was the defence minister in Netanyahu’s own cabinet.

Obviously, President Trump was not expected to tweet on such an outburst against good friend Netanyahu by latter’s own former colleague.

In fact, the anti-corruption demonstrations began in 2016 on a much smaller scale in the hometown of Attorney General Avichai Mendelblit. The protests were about his alleged foot-dragging in several corruption investigations against Netanyahu.

By the time these demonstrations reached Tel Aviv on December 2, 2017, (as well as Jerusalem and Haifa) the agenda had also widened. The target now is Netanyahu and his government.

Ironically, all this was happening when the global media was more busy highlighting the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by President Trump, a move which Netanyahu tried to politically capitalize.

The message of the developments in Iran and Israel is that external enemies can no longer be used to prolong one's stay in power. The demonstrations in Israel might not have got much international publicity, but it is creating problems for Netanyahu and exposing the deepening divide within the country.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu, on New Year’s Day, backed the demonstrators in Iran.

But they dont look like some major protests like severely anti gov or against government decisions.
Infact the charges against Netanyahu dont look very serious. He took bribes for personal gains, i want to understand id his decisions effect people of israel?
Yes protests are big enough to be covered in media.
But generally speaking charges are more corruption related.
But what i am feeling a bit surprised about that some portion of Israeli population is protesting against it which means
1.israeli state is becoming a democracy.
2.Israeli people are principled and have active comsciences when it comes to judging right and wrong (like protesting against pm's corruptiom) for their own good.
I mean in a country like pakistan its near impossible to see some crowd coming out to protest against such charges of corruption.
Obviously these things could come as a threat to controlling israeli administration.

But only if our people stood against corruption like this, we would have been so strong to take on any small and big power.

Several thousand protesters gathered at an anti-corruption demonstration in Tel Aviv, the fifth in as many Saturday nights, calling for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be jailed.

“Netanyahu to Ma’asiyahu [prison],” chanted demonstrators on Rothschild Boulevard in the coastal city.

One protester brandished a sign reading “Traitor-Yahu” on one side, and “Parasite-Yahu,” on the other, a play on the prime minister’s name.

New coalition chairman David Amsalem (Likud) accused the protesters of crossing “red lines.”

“The left-wing protests started with unacceptable pressure against law enforcement, continued with photos of me and Bitan as apes… last week came to the guillotine and incitement to murder, and this week [featured] a sign of ‘Traitor-Yahu’ against the prime minister,” said Amsalem.

“The Rothschild protesters want to replace the government without elections, and on the way they cross red lines again and again,” added the Likud MK.

At the previous Tel Aviv event, held last Saturday night, one protester caused outrage by parading with a cardboard guillotine.

That sign was condemned by lawmakers across the political spectrum and President Reuven Rivlin as “incitement.”

The weekly protests, which began a year ago in Petah Tikva and spread to Tel Aviv, have also alleged stalling by law enforcement in the Netanyahu corruption probes.

The latest round of protests came days after the Knesset passed a law blocking police investigators from informing prosecutors whether they believe there are grounds for indicting suspected public officials.

Police are planning on recommending that Netanyahu stand trial in two criminal cases currently open against him, over suspicions he received illegal gifts and favors from businessmen while advancing their interests, police officials told The Times of Israel.

In Case 1000, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, are suspected of receiving illicit gifts from billionaire benefactors, most notably hundreds of thousands of shekels’ worth of cigars and champagne from the Israeli-born Hollywood producer Arnon Milchan.

Case 2000 involves a suspected illicit quid-pro-quo deal between Netanyahu and Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper publisher Arnon “Noni” Mozes that would have seen the prime minister hobble a rival daily, the Sheldon Adelson-backed Israel Hayom, in return for more favorable coverage from Yedioth.

The prime minister has denied wrongdoing in all instances.

The protesters have sought to position themselves as being above party politics, insisting that the sharp anti-Netanyahu tone at their rallies is due to the fact that the prime minister is under investigation for suspected corruption.

Bolstering that claim was a largely right-wing event Saturday night in Jerusalem that was also billed as anti-corruption. But the rally in the capital, organized by right-wing columnist Yoaz Hendel, Netanyahu’s former communications director and current chair of the centrist Institute for Zionist Strategies think tank, only drew several hundred people.

“Traitor-Yuhu”
One protester carried a sign reading “Traitor-Yahu” on one side, and “Parasite-Yahu,” on the other, reported the Times of Israel.

Doing Away With The Occupation of Palestine to Do Away With Corruption
A few protesters also mentioned the occupation of Palestine, alleging that Israel is a morally corrupt state and that in order to do away with corruption it is essential for them to do away with the occupation of Palestine.
