Tehran offers anti-aircraft missiles to Beirut

BEIRUT: Iran is prepared to provide Lebanon with anti aircraft missiles, the Islamic Republic's ambassador to Lebanon said over the weekend. "Iran is ready to supply modern anti-aircraft arms to Lebanon," the official Islamic Republic News Agency quoted Ambassador Mohammad Reza Sheibani as saying after talks late Saturday with the commander of the Lebanese Army, General Michel Suleiman.

Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's office had no comments on the Iranian initiative.

A high-ranking Lebanese Army source confirmed to The Daily Star Sunday that the statement "was indeed given by the Iranian ambassador and the Lebanese Army has no comments on the matter so far."

However, the source added: "the Lebanese Army has no problem with the source of any received weapons as long as they are provided in the context of defending Lebanon."

"Accepting and buying any weapons remains a political decision that has to be taken by the government. The government's approval is needed to accept these weapons," the source added. "There [was] a statement by the Lebanese government issued in the aftermath of the recent Israeli aggression on Lebanon in which the government promised to re-inforce the army's ability and arsenal and that it will exert efforts with sisterly and friendly states in an attempt to receive such weapons."

He added that the government also issued a decision to "stand in the face of Israel in this context."

The Lebanese Army "currently isn't capable of facing the Israeli arsenal," he said.

A source from Hizbullah said that "currently, Hizbullah has no comments ... What matters now is the Lebanese government's opinion on this issue."

The United States and Israel accuse Iran of supplying arms and financial support to Hizbullah, and accuse Syria of being one of the routes by which such weapons are smuggled to Hizbullah in Lebanon.

Damascus and Tehran deny the allegations.

Lebanon was subjected to a massive Israeli offensive in July and August that demolished the country's infrastructure, killed over 1,400 citizens, one third of whom were children, and wounded over 4,000 people, mostly women and children.

The army has since said it was in market for anti-aircraft and anti-tank weaponry.

According to the IRNA dispatch, Sheibani also called on "Lebanese political groups to maintain their unity to foil plots" of America and Israel.

His comments came as Lebanese politicians were preparing to start consultation rounds on Monday to discuss a possible change of Cabinet amid threats of protests by both Hizbullah and the March 14 Forces.

Hizbullah and it ally, the Free Patriotic Movement, have been calling for the formation of a national unity government which truly represents all Lebanese powers, while the March 14 Forces have threatened to launch counter-demonstrations in order to preserve the current Cabinet. - With agencies

So what are they getting?

Nice opportunity for us to squeeze in some sales of the Anza series. Guerilla warfare and shoulder mounted weapons kind of go hand in hand.

I am pretty sure it will go very effectively!

We pawned the Soviets with stringers. IDF even though now have extreme counter measures, Hezbollah for sure will shot down few helicopters and low-range aircrafts.

.
All that is presuming that the Lebs grow some balls in the meantime.

. .
Yes. That would be a nice addition to lebanon, much to the dismay of already low-moral and badly beaten IDF. :)
Kashif

Pakistan should give some for free, i seen pics of the destruction and we as muslim should help them out! give a hand full and let them use them when the jews make over flights :)

But as someone said they have to grow balls, having nice beaches and hotels wouldn't do any good for that country...weapons are the way to go!

Iran test-fires more new weapons in war games
Nov 04 10:21 AM US/Eastern

Iran has announced it had successfully test-fired new armour-piercing weaponry and an anti-helicopter missile system on the third day of its latest war games.
"The new generation of anti-helicopter and anti-armour weapons were successfully tested on day three of the manoeuvres," an announcer on state television said as pictures of the test-firing were broadcast Saturday.

In the "Great Prophet II" war games, due to last 10 days, Iran has so far fired its Shahab-3 longer range missile for the first time in manoeuvres as well as new types of land-to-sea and sea-to-sea missiles.

The armour-piercing weapons tested Saturday include a rifle equipped with special sights that can identify an enemy seven kilometres (four miles) away and can penetrate a target wearing a bullet-resistant vest from a distance of three kilometres (one-and-a-half miles).

The other new anti-armour weapon tested was a system aimed at penetrating the armour plate of tanks that "can be carried by a person, with high accuracy, high speed and high explosive power".

"The bullet of this system penetrates the armoured equipment and then explodes," state television said.

The anti-helicopter weaponry was described as highly portable and accurate. Four anti-helicopter missiles can be fired from each system.

"The anti-helicopter weapon can hit helicopters in different circumstances," the television added. :army:

"The anti-armour weapon has the ability to penetrate different kinds of advanced bullet-armour vests" as well as the armoured exterior of tanks, it said.

The war games come against a backdrop of rising international tension over Iran's nuclear programme, with the United States leading a drive for UN sanctions against Tehran over its failure to suspend uranium enrichment.

They also coincide with manoeuvres by a US-led naval force in the Gulf off Iran in a test of capabilities to halt trafficking in weapons of mass destruction, the first time such an excercise has been held in the area.

The head of the Iranian parliament's security commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, on Saturday lashed out at the US-led manoeuvres, which he said would increase tension in the region.

"The imperialist countries like the United States are here with bad intentions. They are unwanted guests whose presence is a source of instability and trouble in the region," he said according to the IRNA agency.

US was holding War games in Iran's backyard. Iran had to do something.

The excercise is a propaganda mainly aimed at home audience. In technological terms Iran is a pigmy. Its armamnent industry is still in an embyonic stage. Iranian missiles may work okay against its Arab neighours and Afghanistan. Israel has a far older and better established technological base. US has already been working on anti-missile laser weapons mainly to nullify the threat from 'Rogue States' who own crude missiles.

However, Iran has taken first step towards self reliance and I wish them well.

1. Iran's armament industry is the fastest developing in the middle East and from absolutely nothing in the Shah's time has overtaken Egypt's and all Arab nations and is pretty close to Pakistan.

2. It was Iranian Katyusha's that were raining down in Northern Israel, it was the Katyusha's that forced Israel to send in the ground troops when they didnt want to to flush out the firing sites. It was the Katyusha's that imposed such a heavy cost on Israel's economy that they will think twice of invading Lebanon again.

3. Which the Iranians are closing very rapidly indeed.

Actually the shah (for all his negative points) was pretty big on TOT so the claim that it came from nothing is not really true.

The Challenger tank was to have been for Iran. So I would say the majority of their technological base is from that period. Also a number of m48's and m60's

Plus the aircraft development that I have seen, seems to be a upgrade of a F5. A number of which were purchased at the time of the shah.

Katyushas are hardly what you might call advanced since they have been in use since WW2. And politics played a larger part to that conflict rather than military matters.

I would suggest that Irans industry is still in its infancy and no where close to Israel's (by virtue of the fact that Israel always has TOT from front line US equipment)

Iran still procures arms from Russia. China is ready to sell as well.

.
Iranians' morale's are extremely high these days. They bluff and rebuke everyone like their assistants. These people are extremely tactful. They have grown so much due to Hezbollah standing up against Israel.

Why would'nt they? After all look what what hezbulah did to the so called world's best military. As for them bluffing, when they know that US is busy in iraq and can't really to much other then talk. And iran is going on wiht their nuke progam, so they have reasons to be happy

.
Good times for the Gulf State! As soon as US is finished (if ever) in Iraq it shall assault Iran with great might.
