KARACHI: Pakistan batsman Younis Khan on Friday met Brazilian football coach Romildo Sanchez, who is in Karachi to train young Pakistani footballers for a few days.

The veteran batsman, after warmly greeting the coach, shared his love and passion for football and requested Sanchez to promote the sport in Pakistan.

“We play football here, we love football. After cricket, it’s football here in Pakistan,” Younis said, adding that it has always been his wish to promote the game in the country.

“The moment I got to know you were here in Pakistan I was keen to meet you,” Younis added.

Sanchez, who was visiting Karachi’s ‘mini Brazil’ Lyari stadium today, warmly returned the greetings and invited Younis to come to Brazil to promote cricket in his native country.

“You teach us cricket and we will teach you football,” the coach offered.

Sanchez said that collective efforts are needed to promote football in Pakistan. “The government must step up efforts to develop this sport. You also need schools to promote and develop talent in children for football,” he said.

Speaking to Geo News earlier this week, Sanchez said Pakistanis and Brazilians were very similar.

"Pakistan has a lot of talent for football. It’s like my own country. People here are just like us, only the language is different," he said.

During his visit, Sanchez – who is the Director Players Club of Tampa Bay, Florida-USA – is imparting training to students of different schools and five district associations of the provincial metropolis. He is also holding training sessions for the youth of Lyari — where football is a popular sport.

Yeh, lets stick some foootball/rugby goal posts in the cricket stadiums and encourage the playing of football and rugby. Start a strategy to get a Pakistani football team to the world cup finals.

Well you know Football / Soccer , really is a very simple game. A game for poor where you just need a ball and few bricks marking the goals to play the game.

Most countries that eventually do become better they do it due to strength of the Street soccer culture to develop "raw skills" and then club infrastructure.

  • Pakistan I think have the street culture for sport at ground level however there is lack of Professional Setup, we can't go there as it would be out of scope of this thread

Pakistani Schools don't generally have grassy sports grounds where kids can play league sport at school level and that generally hinders sports in long term

If these type of grounds & league organization existed at School level , we will sow the seeds that will eventually create a culture of sport in 20 years time

Effort has to be done at scool level

1-2 coaches can't change anything , you need effort at grass root level i.e School Level and Neighbourhood level where kids can play weekly

Pakistani Senior Team has had good Role models that have even played in EPL
As you can see below image players have decent fitness and some have played in Europe

From Physical side , the Pakistani players have proper size / fitness however there is alway unbalance between the squad some players are too high quality and some are just ok.

However , if Pakistan ever introduced Oganized school soccer , the results would drastically improve

  • If it is enough to have sports ground (Turf by each school) that itself would be great start instead of kids playing in streets and roads play on turf by school , and leagues managed by school staff

On National Level if Pakistan funds development of 1,000 Artifical Turf field across
KPK, Sindh , Baluchista, Punjab

  • 200 Turf Grounds per Province

We will see players with better skills , and ability

If we had culture of building grounds in communities where Organized sports took place at School level and High school level , after a while we will generate Talent that will seek Professional Oppourtunities

Such nurseries are not that hard to construct. a Coach can only come and improve something once the Grass level infratructure exist "NATION wide" not just 1-2 neighbourhoods

Untill such facilities emerge , and parents get pushed by their children to enrol them into Evening Leagues after 6 only then we can develop a culture for sport and Talent needed to make global impact

Synthetic grass generally made these days is fantastic surface that offers great soccer experience and requires 0% water, I notice in Pakistan you see kids or youth training on dusty
gardens or places where there is hardly any grass and surace is hard as Rock
stony really not ideal

  • National Goal should be 1,000 such Professional grade fields Nation Wide

  • School Sports League Organizers should rent the fields and then setup Youth Leagues for very "marginal cost to kids/youth"

How Effective is the League / Ground Grass root Approach:

  • 1 Artificial Grass surface , can serve max 3 Ameture Leagues , Youth , Senior , Women , up to 10,000 players

  • 1,000 Artifical Grass surface , can serve 3,000 Ameture Leagues ,Youth , Seniors , Women up to 10 Million players

After you have 10 Million players , then you can Think about Professional Training to pick the creme of the crop !!! For advance Training (i.e Professional Clubs). This is where Professional Scouts come into picture

Pakistan with its present system , creates players but they generally lack proper skills because the type of football played , on stoney , or dust devil grounds promotes a KICK high and chase approach

Artifical Turf , is the way forward

Final comment :
Most people don't realize that Football is a sport where skills are developed normally young age 5-12 and that is area where Pakistan lacks behind most countries
