The Tata Nano has received the world's oldest and most coveted GOOD DESIGN Award for 2010, which is conferred annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

The award for the Tata Nano has come in the category of transportation.

Tata Nano's design is such that it offers an incredibly spacious passenger compartment which can comfortably seat four adults.

With a length of just 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, the Tata Nano has the smallest exterior footprint for a car in India but is 21 per cent more spacious than the smallest car available today.

A high seating position makes ingress and egress easy.

Its small size coupled with a turning radius of just 4 metres, makes it extremely manoeuverable in small parking slots.

The engine enables the car to have a top speed of 105 kmph and negotiate inclines with a gradeability of 30 per cent.

Its fuel efficiency of 23.6 km/litre, certified by the Automotive Research Association of India under mandated test conditions, is the highest for any petrol car in India.

The high fuel efficiency, coupled with a low kerb weight of 600 kg, ensures that the Tata Nano - at 101 gm/km - has the lowest CO2 emission amongst cars in India.

Since August this year, the company has already begun open sales of the Tata Nano, and it is already freely available in 12 states.

Retail sales have substantially increased in the first five states of open sales. Besides its already existing showrooms, the company is setting up Special Nano Access Points for customers in the hinterlands to experience, test-drive or test-ride the car.

Gradually expanding these reach-out initiatives, coupled with customer benefits (4-year / 60,000 km warranty; comprehensive maintenance contract at only Rs 99 per month; finance options up to 90 per cent), Tata Motors will cover the entire country with open sales by March 2011 to take the Tata Nano to those who dream of owning the car.

Founded in Chicago in 1950, GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition for advancing new, visionary, and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design.

In 2010, GOOD DESIGN celebrated its 60-year anniversary as the world's oldest and most prestigious awards programme for product and graphic design.

Sure its fun, for 5-10 minutes. The family that is going to buy it isn't going to buy it for that fun though. This isn't even remotely a car. I'd say a motorcycle is safer than that.

No offense to anyone.

A few weeks ago I read Nano sales are down, for the month of November sales were like 500. The Nano apparently costs as much as Suzuki when sold with popular options.

There is no way a motorcycle is safer than a car.

Taiwan firm mulls introducing India’s Nano car

Taiwan’s TECO Group is mulling introducing the world’s cheapest car -- India’s Nano -- to Taiwan.

Huang Mao-hsiung, honorary chairman of the TECO Group, recently unveiled two Nano cars at a news conference in Taipei.

“We are making the evaluation to decide if we want to be Nano’s agent, or to cooperate with India’s TATA Motors to make Nano components, or to launch an electric car based on the Nano,” he said.

If TECO launches the Nano in Taiwan, it will be an upgraded version, with extras like air bags added, for example, and priced under 280,000 Taiwan dollars (6,000 US dollars), he said.

The Nano, launched in March 2009, sells for about 2,500 US dollars in India.

Although there was a somewhat mixed reaction to the TECO Group’s announcement, some Taiwanese look forward to the arrival of the Nano because of its low price.

“One should not worry about Nano’s safety because if TECO launches Nano, it will be an upgraded version of the Nano. It will be more comfortable and safer than India’s Nano,” Chen Jun-ping, a Taipei teacher, said.

“Potential buyers will be people who now ride motorbikes but want to move on to cars and can’t afford to buy one,” he added.

but suzuki stoping it's production of M800........the next cheapest car to Nano will be Alto which is twice the cost of Nano...

but i think that buying a car is still a more status symble then a cost concern..
