Tata Motors to Supply Military Vehicles to Thailand and Myanmar

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to turn India’s erstwhile policy of “Look East” to “Act East Policy”, India’s leading private sector company and largest auto maker by sales—Tata Motors, is all set to penetrate new markets in South East Asia and secure significant orders for supply of military vehicles–both troop carriers and combat vehicles to Thailand and Myanmar.
Speaking to DefenceAviationPost.com on the sidelines of the DefExpo India 2016, the vice president, defence and government business, Tata Motors, Vernon Norohna said the company has already passed trialss for supplying the 715 GS 2.5 ton military vehicles to the Royal Thai Army. These vehicles, Norohna said, are used essentially as troop carriers with a capacity to carry 11 troops.
“Besides Thailand, we are also looking at Myanmar as a market to supply military vehicles,” added Norohna.
While the “Look East Policy” was introduced in the early 1990s when the Congress party’s PV Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister of India. The same policy was endorsed by former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh. This policy has been re-christened as the “Act East Policy” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has been lauded as the country’s most successful foreign policy initiative taken in the past two decades.
Asked to comment a foreign policy expert seeking anonymity said, “Indian companies penetrating into the markets of Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam etc is a great commercial move especially in the backdrop of China’s extraordinary ascendance to the world stage and its dominance in the markets of Myanmar and Thailand.” As per him, while Thailand is presently flooded with Japanese make of military and commercial vehicles, Myanmar has dominance from China in the segment.
Although for Tata Motor’s, this is more of a commercial move, but experts view this penetration as a hedge against China’s massive commercial presence in Myanmar. “Moreover, there is a huge opportunity in the combat vehicles space as these vehicles are facing replacement in many countries across the globe.”
Back home in India, Norohna said Tata Motors is placing a lot of emphasis on the wheeled platform Kestrel—the armoured amphibious platform in which the company plans to put anti-tank missiles and guns for use by the forces of the Indian Army.
“In combat vehicles, Tata Motors has indigenously designed and developed, along with DRDO, the Wheeled Armored Platform (WHAP) – theKESTREL Infantry Combat Vehicle, designed for optimized survivability, all terrain performance and increased lethality,” he added.
Significantly, Tata Motors carried out a live demonstration of Kestrel for the first time at DefExpo India 2016, held at South Goa. The live demonstration of Tata Kestrel tool place, right behind the performance by Arjun Tank.
While Tata-Kestrel is essentially a wheeled armoured personnel carrier, variants of the same are being planned that can also be used as a platform to support Army’s combat operations.
Tata’s Kestral and its variants, as and when inducted, will replace the Russian make BMPs, an amphibious infantry fighting vehicle, and APCs (armoured personnel carrier) in the Indian Army.
Tata’s are expecting big business in this space from within India and across the world as there are 50,000 combat vehicles in the world that are facing replacement.

Tata Motors has also developed a Light Armoured Multi-Role Vehicle (LAMV) – a reconnaissance vehicle, combining vital operational pre requisites of mobility, protection and firepower. Equipped with modern observation, surveillance and communication equipment, the LAMV is meant to provide armed forces with the technological edge, necessary to achieve superiority on the battlefield.
