I have worked in TATA Commercial Vehicles briefly. Type TATA Cummins and Google will provide you all the answers . Light trucks use local TATA engines while Heavier Trucks mostly above 25t use Cummins engines which are manufactured jointly by TATA Cummins Company in India .

Please Don't go Gaga over TATA trucks at best they assemble lot of parts in Trucks which are manufactured by European and American companies in India , Even their Bus ranges of Tata Marcopolo are another tie up with Brazilian Company .

Indigenous content in TATA trucks are same as BharatBenz Trucks . Everything is Sourced

Tata has light trucks usually used for Troop carrier which is powered by Local Tata engines . Current order is for Heavy trucks to be used on Weapons or its support platforms like radars etc which uses American Cummins engines .

Commercial Diesel Engines are manufactured by Tata Cummins Ltd.

Nothing in TATA trucks is sourced from outside the country other than the R&D that is carried out in SK,EU.

As you said you worked in TDCVC you probably know that no one can built those parts other than the companies (or in JV) because they got patents.The core engine market is all about a few companies like Bosch,Delphi,Denso.So according to you,Maruti 800 is a German product.

Most phones use an ARM architecture and the processor's are manufactured under license ,so does this mean the ARM offerings of Mediatek,RockChip,HiSilicon,Nvidia,Qualcomm are all British ?

TATA has had a long history of partnerships with foreign companies,they began their trucks bussiness with Merc and Volvo designs.

Your posts gives the impression that TATA imports parts for its entire range of vehicles and trucks and merely assembles them in their plants,which is false. It is true that TATA has ttaken assistance from other companies in making their vehicles,but bulk of their vehicles are completely made in their plants,in and outside India.

In that case you are making unnecessary fuss about an old truck of TATA that has nothing to do with the truck being discussed in this thread .

He is talking about - Tata 407 troop carrier - it's a pretty old one and not designed for military use in the first place - won't be surprised if it's engine had break down issues.

But the other one he is probably talking about is Tata LPTA 1621 - it's a good vehicle both off and on road - never heard the IA had problems with it (neither with Tata 407).

No brother , he is just talking about a single truck -- 407 .

As you said you worked in TDCVC you probably know that no one can built those parts other than the companies (or in JV) because they got patents.The core engine market is all about a few companies like Bosch,Delphi,Denso.So according to you,Maruti 800 is a German product.

We are taking about engines here not abs or power steering or Horns like you want to show . Maruti 800 also has Suzuki engine which is Japanese company , we might call it Indian company but technology is not India.

JV is namesake all technology is from Cummins, they have sold same engines Yes Same Cummins engines which are powering Tata Trucks are also used in AMW trucks ( Asia Motor Works Ltd (AMW)) , If you have never heard about this truck company just google it it is also an Indian company .

Seriously ?? ARM Example !! , We are talking about Trucks not Mobiles . Unlike Mobile companies Truck manufactures don't depend on one or two companies for engines .

Hopes high on govt's thrust for indigenous manufacture, flow of inquiries & contracts being readied

The defence division of Tata Motors, the country's largest automobile maker, is eyeing Rs 60,000 crore of contracts to build combat vehicles. There is a silent race between companies to have the largest piece of the $100-billion worth of defence acquisitions laid out by the government over the next decade from local companies.

The company has bagged a Rs 914-crore contract to supply 1,239 indigenously developed high mobility multi-axle vehicles, the single largest order awarded by the army to an Indian private original equipment manufacturer in land systems under the Defence Procurement Policy.

Vernon Noronha, vice-president, defence and government business, Tata Motors, said: "In the past two years of the previous government, there were almost no orders. One year after the present government came to power, all our stuck files started moving and there was quick acceleration of orders. This has enthused not only Tata Motors but the entire industry."

The order book is Rs 1,500 crore, to be executed over the next two years. The division clocked revenue of Rs 1,200 crore last year and aims to double it in two years, Noronha added. In the past three years, the division generated revenue of Rs 2,000 crore or about three per cent of Tata Motors' total.

Indian companies are quickly building capabilities to grab a piece of the defence pie.

In two weeks, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) forged alliances with two European companies to supply underwater warfare equipment and military helicopters. The Anil Ambani-led Reliance Group entered the sector with the acquisition of Pipavav Defence.

"Earlier, RFPs (Request for Proposals) were issued at a snail's pace. Today, the Indian Army and ministry of defence are chasing companies, asking us to put our vehicles for trials as fast as possible," said Noronha.

The Rs 60,000-crore contract to build a Future Infantry Combat Vehicle is one of the biggest defence contracts of recent times. The previous government had floated an Expression of Interest (EoI) in 2008, after which eight private Indian companies responded. These had included Bharat Forge, Titagarh Wagons, M&M and Tata Motors. The Modi government scrapped the previous EoI and a revised one is expected in the next couple of months.

Beside, orders worth Rs 1,053 crore for the light armoured multipurpose vehicle, Rs 1,000 crore for armoured personnel carriers and Rs 3,000 crore for general service vehicles are being targeted by companies. A wheeled infantry combat vehicle is being built by Tata Motors in association with the Defence Research and Developent Organisation, of which the army is looking to procure 100 units.

"Eventually, we would like to become a manufacturer of light tanks and then the main battle tank. That is how we would like the progression to happen. The army released a request for information to develop the Future Ready Combat Vehicle, which will be the main battle tank. We have put in a response," added Noronha.

Long History of rebadging ( relaunch (a product) under a new name or logo.) is the right term used in Automobile industry for such cooperation . Yes all their Trucks are made in their plants and yes many of parts are sourced from differnet companies which are not Indian.

Just go to any TATA Commercial vehicle Showroom and ask for Tata 1612 tipper , first thing Salesman will ask You is which one you want 1612 with Tata 697 TCIC BSIII engine or 1612 with Tc ( Tata Cummins) engine .
