Task Force-88 (for the seaward security of Gwadar port)

. . .
After testing of Azb the reports came that it deployed PN. Similarly previously PN ahd coastal defence batteries armed with C602 Missiles. I wonder why a pro like Mr Rashid is denying it's deployment. Though details of Azb not came out yet many assume it to be better version of C602, prepared domestically with longer range to get exemption from MTCR regulations. Pak is not a rich country to just test Missile for testing purpose. By the way I have read abt some Scandinavian country that they are reactivating their coastal defense batteries.

Perhaps there is some secrecy maintained by PN in some areas i.e Missiles deployed on PN ships. As I found from net that PN has only Harpoons of initial blocks with range of 120 KM at best and with no surface attack capability but was denied by some senior member that PN has got some later version with more range and surface attack capability. Similarly net sources show that PN has only deployed C 802 Missile on PN ships meanwhile sources also show procurement of C803. CM400AKG status also not clear.

Hypothetically speaking, IF Pakistani Armed Forces were to deploy CMB's - Coastal Missile Batteries, would it be under PN or PA?

Well, you know who runs the Coast Guards.
So it will be a tough decision but I guess PN would, because Anti-Ship is the keyword and targeting a ship at sea is the Navy's ball game.

PN has the CM400AKG in service on the Jf 17s squardon dedicated for naval services. The role of coastal defence batteries is important because of the deficient surface fleet operated by PN. Deployment of less than required numbers of surface fleet and leaving the coast without any special defence will be like an invitation to the enemy.

Now for the common man this is confusing. What is the difference between Coast guard and MSA? Can you shed some light on it?

Coast Guards

The Coast Guards consisted the active-duty members of Pakistan Army and commanded by one-star rank Brigadier who is headquartered in Karachi, Sindh Province of Pakistan. The Coast Guard are charged and mandated with protecting the coastal areas of Balochistan and Sindh Province while it conducts military exercises and operations relating to riverine warfare.

The Coast Guards were first established as the Maritime Security Agency in 1971 and constituted operationally in 1972 through a Presidential Ordinance. The Parliament restored the constitutional status of the Branch after passing and promulgating the "Coast Guards Act" in 1973 and recognized as one of the six uniformed services of Paramilitary Command. Since then, it has upgraded its facilities and fleet to bolster its capabilities of littoral patrolling of the coast line. In addition to land based troops, the Coast Guards also maintains a small fleet of patrol boats to perform its sea-borne duties, although the operations in deep water and dangerous undertaking are conducted by its counterpart Maritime Security Agency (MSA) of Pakistan Navy. The Pakistan Coast Guards works under administrative control of Ministry of Interior in peacetime whereas it will come under operational control of Pakistan Army in wartime situations.

MSA

The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) was formally inaugurated on 1 January 1987 and gained its constitutional status in 1997 after ratification of the UNCLOS.

Pakistan Maritime Security Agency has roles in
  1. Maritime homeland security,
  2. National and international maritime law enforcement (MLE),
  3. Search and rescue (SAR),
  4. Marine environmental protection (MEP), and the
  5. Maintenance of intracoastal and offshore aids to navigation (ATON).
  6. The agency is mandate to protect the fishing vessels and crew against any threat within the Maritime Zones (MZ).
The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) is a paramilitary branch of the Pakistan Navy, not a separate branch. The officers, other ranks and equipment, are mostly derived from the Navy. The agency consists of a Director-General and it is commanded by a 2-star rank, a Rear-Admiral seconded from Pakistan Navy.

The agency performs military operations authorized by the Ministry of Defence to protect the economic and maritime interests of Pakistan. The agency also provides security and assists governmental agencies, international organizations and the Pakistan Navy in petroleum and other mineral exploration in Pakistan's naval zones. The agency coordinates the oceanographic research and other scientific activities of the Navy Hydrographic Department.
