Our Correspondent . Narayanganj
The mayor of Narayanganj, Selina Hayat Ivy, at a rally on on Friday evening accused Awami League leader Shamim Osman of killing schoolboy Tanvir Mohammad Towki.
If you are brave, then kill me, Selina said referring to her political rival AKM Shamim Osman, also a former lawmaker, on the last of the five-day demonstrations the Sammilita Sangskritik Jote held at the Chashara Shaheed Minar.
Tanvir Mohammad Towki, 17, a A-level student of the ABC International School in the city, was found dead on March 8 after he had gone missing on March 6. The killing triggered a protest in the district.
Tanvir was son of Rafiur Rabbi, vice-president of district unit Nagarik Committee, former president of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote and convener of Ganajagaran Mancha, set up at the call of Shahbagh protesters.
Selina called Shamim a coward for killing Towki. She said that Shamims family had migrated to Narayanganj from Daudkandi in Comilla. If you want to lead the party, then go to Comilla. We, residents of Narayanganj, will lead our city, she said.
Selina Hayat said that Shamim had always patronised terrorists and seized Narayanganj people with terrorism. She alleged that the gang of Shamim used to leave the country when the Awami League faced a crucial moment and the gang reappeared when the Awami League ran the government.
We have been suffering thirty years of Shamim Osmans terrorism. We no longer want to tolerate this. Together, we will prevent and eliminate terrorists from Narayanagnj, she said.
Rafiur Rabbi also blamed three brothers of Shamim Osman and said one of the three brothers had given shelter to the killers and sent them abroad.
Another of the three brothers had met the home minister where the minister asked him not to talk too much on the issue, Rafiur said. In reply, he [Shamims brother] told the minister that that there would be uproar for two to three days and everything would then settle down.
There is a torture cell in the city run by the three brothers where people are tortured every night but the police cannot find anything. Rabbi said.
AB Siddik, president of district unit Nagarik committee, presided over the rally. Asked for comments about the accusations, Shamim on Friday told New Age, I will not say anything about the matter today. I will rather talk tomorrow.
