DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An oil tanker sought by the U.S. over allegedly circumventing sanctions on Iran was hijacked on July 5 off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, a seafarers organization said Wednesday.

Satellite photos showed the vessel in Iranian waters on Tuesday and two of its sailors remained in the Iranian capital.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened aboard the Dominica-flagged MT Gulf Sky, though its reported hijacking comes after months of tensions between Iran and the U.S.

Judging by whats actually written in the rest of the article this seems more like a possible "repossession" of an iranian owned vessel by iran that had been stuck for months in the uae under a civil action caused by the us seizure/freezing of the funds used for its purchase.
Strangely this all supposedly happened over 10 days ago back on july the 5th but is only now being reported/commented on by the western media.

According to the ILO, the Gulf Sky was taken to Iran where all 28 Indian crew members disembarked. Most of the crew flew from Tehran to India on 15 July. Two of them did not have passports and are still in Iran.

According to Al Jazeera, the UN agency said earlier that the tanker and its crew had been abandoned by its owners without pay since March off Khor Fakkan, a city on the eastern coast of the UAE. American officials have been trying to trace the vessel as it is believed to have been breaking US sanctions on Iran. Neither Washington nor Tehran have commented on this.

“The vessel was taken to Iran,” the ILO told the Associated Press.

The ILO cited the International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network for its information. The ILO earlier filed a report saying the vessel and its sailors had been abandoned by its owners without pay since March off Khorfakkan, a city on the eastern coast of the UAE.

Upon arrival in Iran, authorities took 26 members of the crew, all from India, and flew them back to their home country on July 15. Two more members of the crew did not fly because they did not have passports. Their circumstances remain unknown but it is believed that they remain in Tehran.
