Tamilnadu - slippers hurled at India's former NSA

Former national security adviser MK Narayanan was attacked by a suspected pro-Tamil activist with slippers at a function in Chennai on Wednesday.

According to eyewitnesses, the person shouted slogans and hurled slippers that hit Narayanan, former governor of West Bengal, on his shoulder and head at a meeting on the future of Sri Lankan refugees in India, organized by the Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy.

The man, later identified as Prabhakaran from Pudukottai, came from behind and threw the slippers. A pro-Tamil group was holding protest outside the venue.

He was shouting “Narayanan is responsible for the plight of Lankan Tamils” and “resolutions on Lanka (moved by Amma) had been ignored by the Centre”.

It was known that some Tamils were holding protests. The only significance was that someone managed to get close enough to throw slippers.

BTW everyone in the venue was wearing footwear. So no significance at all.

According to police sources, the accused was booked under Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint), 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour person) and 507 (1)(criminal intimidation) of IPC.

After night-long interrogation, the police produced him before a judicial magistrate for remand. Preliminary enquiries revealed that Mr. Prabhakaran's parents migrated to Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka where they worked in a tea plantation in 1973. Mr. Prabhakaran's antecedents were being investigated, the sources added.

Mayankote Kelath Narayanan headed the Intelligence Bureau (IB) from 1987 to 1990, before heading the Joint Intelligence Committee. He became Chief of the IB again in 1991, before retiring in 1992.

India was facing big problems during that time as all these happened during the heights of the cold war. Too much pressure was there on NSA during that time.


The problem is still there as there are Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees living in India.

why highlight the above - you need to know there are 2 types of Tamil in Lanka 1 - Eelam Tamils - the true owners of Lanka (as Sinhalas were Bangla migrants) 2 - up country or plantation Tamil who were brought to work in tea estates in Central Lanka by the British in the 19th century. who were repatriated under the Srimavo-Satri pact - so technically they are Tamilnadu Tamils

Although India denied any legal responsibility for these people, it acknowledged a "sentimental interest" in them.[8]

The central part of the pact was the granting of Ceylonese citizenship to 300,000 of the Indian population in Sri Lanka, while 525,000 would be repatriated to India

We just cant forget the cold war politics because we have to see everything from wider and broader angle. Cant you see that we were being attacked from all the sides because of the hidden proxy war.

Indian Peace keepers gone to Sri Lanka in between 1987 and 1990 and during that time Soviet union forces were in Afghanistan in North and in Middle East , Iran-Iraq War and during that time even tensions were high in Myanmar which were creating problems in North East and even in Nepal tensions were high.
