Malayalam diverged from Tamil 1000 yrs ago... so there is lots of similarities.. malayalam sounds closest to classical tamil.. when someone talks in malayalam it sounds heavenly especially compared to chennai tamil... and about similarity of words... there is this malayalam song which i thought was a tamil song till i found it was playing in a malayalam channel
