The Taliban are designing a government based on Iran’s model through appointing the group’s leader Hibatullah Akhundzada as the Supreme Leader of Afghanistan, CNN-News18 reported on Tuesday.

While Iran has a president and a cabinet, the supreme leader is the religious authority who holds the highest office in the country with powers to dictate policy, overrule laws and override the president. He has the final say in all matters of state.

“Taliban’s supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada — who has never made a public appearance and whose whereabouts have largely remained unknown — will most likely be the Supreme Leader, presiding over a Supreme Council of 11 to 72,” CNN-News18 said citing sources.

The report added that Akhundzada, who led the Taliban since 2016, will mostly work out of Kandahar.

Kandahar was the birthplace of the group and the epicenter of the Taliban’s iron-fisted government in the 1990s.

The Taliban announced on Sunday that Akhundzada is in Afghanistan. “He is present in Kandahar. He has been living there from the very beginning,” said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Mujahid also told Reuters on Saturday that the group will announce a complete cabinet within a week, and it will include not just ministers but leaders as well.

This would be very practical for them. Have a supreme leader and a IRGC like gaurd under him composed of key specialist.

The taliban should appoint a technocrat like Abdullah Abdullah as President or PM. He is a very sane guy and wanted to negotiate with them for a decade now. Wants to even settle/accept the Durand line with Pakistan. One of the few afghan leaders to say this quiet openly. Having him in a key position would infact improve the talibans image and most importantly open financing from key international institituions.

yes and Taliban need to understand they cant trade and deal with the World on their own

they need access to the international monetary system they need a working banking system

its not 2001 its 2021

they need the Internet

now 1st and foremost they must at all costs get the Qataris and Turks on board

start getting recognition

within 1 year world will recognise them as legitimate government of Afghanistan

and any sign of ISIS-K and wipe them out

Abdullah Abdullah may make a sensible President in such a setup. Considering the constitution the new rulers are reviewing is a 1960s Afghan constitution, when they use to have a king, it is possible this setup may work. Having an ethnic Tajik President maybe a good compromise, at least for the first President, to help bring stability and unity to the country “with Afghan Characteristics”

Even as someone pro democracy, i would support this because democracy only works if your population is literate enough but the afghanis aren't. So a dictatorship will only work, right now Irani system is decent but overtime as they become more stable and prosperous, they should shift to the Chinese model. And again overtime when their population is capable enough on voting for the right person without being influenced by simple plates of biryani then the final step would be shifting to a democratic system.
