WASHINGTON: A US air strike has killed Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour in a remote area along the Pak-Afghan border, the Pentagon announced late on Saturday night.

“Today, the US Department of Defence conducted a precision air strike, targeting Mullah Mansour in a remote area in the Pakistan-Afghan border region,” said Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook.

He said the president of the United States had authorised the air strike and that Pakistan and Afghanistan were both notified of it.

“Mullah Mansour was the leader of the Afghan Taliban and presented a continuing threat to our personnel in Afghanistan and to Afghan civilians, Afghan security forces and coalition members across Afghanistan.”

Mansour was prohibiting Taliban leaders from participating in peace talks, claims Pentagon
The US official noted that Mullah Mansour was an obstacle to reconciliation between the Afghan government and the Taliban and was prohibiting the Taliban leaders from participating in peace talks with the government that could lead to an end to the Afghan conflict.

The Pentagon said that since the death of Mullah Omar and Mullah Mansour’s assumption of leadership, the Taliban had conducted many attacks that resulted in the deaths of thousands of Afghan civilians and security forces as well as numerous US and coalition personnel.

“We are still assessing the results of the strike and will provide more information as it becomes available,” Mr Cook added.

Diplomatic sources in Washington said that Mullah Mansour’s death would not cause any major concerns in Pakistan’s power circles.

The sources claimed that Mullah Mansour had some ties with the Pakistanis in the past but relations became strained after he became leader of the Afghan Taliban. Pakistan made several attempts in the recent past to persuade him to join the reconciliation talks but he refused.

Diplomatic observers in Washington, however, said that Mullah Mansour’s death would further fragment the Taliban movement, which split into several factions after Mullah Omar’s death.

“His death will have both negative and positive consequences,” said one diplomatic source. “Sometimes, it is easier to deal with a unified leadership and sometimes a weakened leadership is better. We have to wait and see how this unfolds.”

I for one don't want to see Pakistan isolated, because we need to develop as a region.
when did Pakistan started getting isolated? For the first time in decades we have started relationship with a new country( Russia) which wasn't the case before.

Indians on eastern side of Pakistan are seeing these kinds of Pakistan's isolation and destruction dreams since last sixty seventy years.
They don't see Pakistan on map of world after every five years.

BTW where is mulla radio ? Hopefully healthy and enjoying in Afghanistan.

.
It's better to hold talks with the Afghan Taliban. They won't be beaten. If there's some pressure on them they'll lay low as long as it takes and continue again. People just don't learn.

.
good news for india and pro indian afghan govt. bad news for afghanistan . afghan taliban will never return to peace talks now. they will never accept the puppet afghan govt in kabul. more skirmishes will take place between the ANA and the afghan taliban and there will be more bomb basts. more ANA soldiers and civilians will die. US never wants peace anywhere in the ME or afghanistan. afghanistan, iraq, libya, syria were far more stable and prosperous before US intervention. don't know why the world can't see it or probably they don't want to see it at all.

mulla radio is doing the job right for india, USA and their puppet afghan govt so he must be enjoying his life.

well well well, Afghan have saying about american " they signal left but turn right", Mansour was one of the modest leader in Taliban circle actually more moderate than Obama himself in his dealings but as some one here pointing that he was against peace talks, no my friend the main objective of talib movement is to bring peace but talib have very clear stance on peace talks. according to them peace should be taken literal that is it peace, and not to score any political objective. they wanted american and ashraf ghani government to invest in peace talks if they are serious about the reconciliation, that is why they set precondition. instead of weighting precondition which frustrated Taliban, they set high hopes from pakistan and pakistan inability to bring them to table made them frustrated.

.
Looks like Pakistan Army had to give him up to get that F-16 subsidy approved.

Beggars will always be beggars.

. . . .
Good. American strike occurred in Baluchistan area. If Pak Army is not willing to act against Afghan Taliban than US will. More embarrassment coming our way now.

Its a clear message for Pakistan as well that US will launch attack any where inside Pakistan now. US Pak relations to detorioate further. Its a fact that we have taken strong action against TTP but not against Afghan talibans and Haqqani network.

.
How come they can't kill Goat Al Baghdadi? Or will they kill him when he's no longer needed?
they milk their goats fully and when these goats become useless they get rid of them. bait ullah mahsud, hakim ullah mahsud are the recent examples. next in line are mullah radio and baghdadi. so far they are doing the right job for their masters

.
Afghan side has maintained no more , talks the Talis will be dealt with militarily.

Sir, Ofcourse that's the best thing to do - And we all wish you very best of luck for it. What really concerns us is how much and how long you can do it.
