Taliban bombing near GHQ R.A. Bazaar in Rawalpindi kills 13
RAWALPINDI: Thirteen people were killed and twenty-four others were injured when an explosion took place in Rawalpindi's RA Bazar early Monday morning. The banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Police and military officials said, a suicide bomber was possibly involved in the attack, which was powerful enough to smash windows of nearby buildings.
"Apparently it was a suicide attack," a military official told.
According to official sources, a suicide bomber riding a bicycle was intercepted when he detonated the device near RA Bazar killing 13 people including a 19-year-old student who was on his way to college. The deceased included six security men and seven civilians, sources told.
According to DCO Rawalpindi, two suspects were detained from the blast site.
The intensity of the blast shattered glass windows in the area. Security was put on high alert throughout the area after the blast.
Rescue and hospital sources add, that 24 others including school students were also injured who were shifted to nearby hospitals including CMH and MS.
Security forces cordoned off the area while residents were forced to stay indoors. The Bomb disposal squad was called in to ascertain the safety of the residents.
Media personnel were not allowed to approach the blast site as security personnel gathered evidence.
