The Taliban insurgents have blown up a water dam in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan as the group has unleashed an unprecedented violence in key southern provinces during the recent days.

According to the local security officials, the incident took place earlier today in the remote part of Shorabak district.

Provincial police spokesman Zia Durani confirmed that a water dam was detonated by the Taliban insurgents using explosives materials.

Durani further added that the dam was constructed in a remote part of Shorabak district which was playing a key role in irrigating the agricultural lands.

He said thousands of acres of land and gardens were irrigated by the dam and its destruction has sparked panic among the residents who are saying that their land will be harmed if it is not reconstructed immediately.

The Taliban insurgents group has not commented regarding the report so far.

Kandahar has been among the relatively calm provinces in southern Afghanistan during the recent years but the security situation of the province, particularly, the remote districts have started to deteriorate during the recent months and after the Taliban militants increased their focus on key southern provinces after they launched their spring offensive in April this year.

Can anybody elaborate which dam?

Did it actually happen or not?
Must be some small insignificant dam, only Sputnik and Khamanews are reporting.

Apparently it was big enough to irrigate thousands of acres of land.

This is odd. Their openly stated position is they will never carry out any attack that harms public interest. Also interesting to note they haven't given any statement yet. I am in wait and watch mode on this. I would also want to know what is the military value of carrying out such an act? Finally, Kandahar is their historical power base. It seems illogical they would try to alienate their own power base.

Lately they have been targeting Kandahar. Could by false flag attacks to discourage recruitment.

Hi Taliban at several times have advocated and set an example where they have not targeted development projects .This could be some one dirty game to anger the locals

The Iranians were not happy with the dams in Afghanistan and the afghan officials accused iran of supporting the Taliban

Either the one at Kajaki (north-west of Kandahar) or the one a Kim (north east of Kandahar). The latter may be the most vulnerable to explosion.

to be fair i think the location of this dam was at Pakistan border ! ( need confirmation )

.
A river does flow through Shorabak, by name of Lora, which gets dried up in summer. They must have built dam on river for reservior

this look like fake news
Indians have clearly using social / mainstream media as a tool to create confusion and anarchy ,should avoid these fake news infact @moderators should not let this platform to be used to incite mass confusions

.
Why would the governor lie.
They always hide news of death and other incidents. But this time they have accepted while keeping it low. Maybe not giving encouragment to the terrorist . I doubt Taliban's would do that. Isis have experience of dam in Iraq and sham.

.
It was probably the ISI (!)
