Taking out Syria vital for United States
What makes Syrian President Bashar al Assad different from Bahrain King Hamid bin Isa al Khalifah? Unlike the latter one, the former is no stooge of Washington. Obviously this irks the United States.
Further, Syria has close relations with Russia and Iran, whose interests clash with that of the United States. Despite the regime change in Washington, the Bush doctrine ‘Either you are with us or not with us’ prevails. It does not tolerate even neutrality or independence.
Though Washington and its allies speak of human rights and democracy it’s only a cloak to cover their sinister designs. If their concern was genuine they should have voiced a similar concern for the people of Bahrain. The people in Bahrain under dynastic rule are brutally repressed, Syria’s Bashar al Assad seems almost a saint.
Syria has been gripped by anti-government protests for over 11 months. Protests have taken a violent character with armed squads being formed with the assistance of external powers. There is evidence that Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar are providing weapons to the Opposition. Obviously there is an attempt to repeat the Libyan modus operandi to effect a regime change according to a script written by the Pentagon. It comprises four stages, some implemented simultaneously.
They are (1) exerting economic pressure (2) international misinformation campaign (3) supplying military aid to the opposition and (4) military intervention with or without a UN Security Council resolution in support. As demonstrated in the case of Libya even an oblique reference by the UN to human rights violations would be sufficient. The UN legitimized ‘No Fly Zone’ in Libya actually turned out to be a ‘More Bombing Zone’.
Why is regime change in Syria so vital for the United States? The United States has a grand design to establish its hegemony in the Middle East and Central Asia. It would not only give the United States access to the rich oil resources in the region but also would help it to regain world supremacy. As President Obama said in his recent Address to the Nation, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Asia-Pacific are of strategic importance to the United States.
Obviously they are countering Russia, China and Iran. Syria is an obstacle to the United States in attaining its objective of effecting regime change in Iran, which is subjected to a sort of nuclear blackmail. A pro-American regime in Syria would lesson the risks involved in effecting a regime change in Iran. In addition, US ally Israel would feel more secure without Assad and the Syrian forces in Lebanon, thus reducing also the military challenge from Hezbollah movement.
The United States, unlike in the case of Iraq or Libya, is more cautious this time. It is using proxies – the Arab League to further its ends. In fact, the Arab League has become an open stooge of the United States and there is nothing ‘Arab’ left, for the Arabs have been anti-imperialist throughout. The Arab League has even ignored its own Observer Mission to Syria which reported about the regime’s cooperation with it and the armed violence perpetrated by Opposition groups.
So far the Syrian drama is played according to the script. There is only one difference. Russia and China have by their veto in the UN Security Council prevented or delayed the implementation of stage four of the plan.
Another factor causing restraint is the forthcoming Presidential election in the United States. Even US Foreign Secretary Hilary Clinton was careful enough not to mention about armed intervention at the so-called summit of Friends of Russia held in Damascus. For the time being at least, the United Stat has ruled out military intervention.
A referendum on a new Constitution was passed with a huge majority last week despite the calls for a boycott by the Opposition groups and foreign governments. This opens a new avenue for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. However, the misinformation campaign carried out globally by the imperialist media threatens any peace effort.
It is spreading lies in order to provoke armed clashes. For example, its claim that the French journalist Gillen Jacquier was killed by the Government forces has been proved wrong with evidence surfaced that proved that he was killed by the Opposition armed groups. To understand the reality in Syria one must, therefore, read between the lines of text messages disseminated by Reuters, AFP,AP and other wire services in the service of global capital. One must also be able to decode the veiled slogans of democracy and human rights put forward to hide regressive socio-political changes.
