TAKA 120 CRORE BUDGET TO SLICE BNP?
Islamist-secularist polarisation tends to make nationalists redundant

M. Shahidul Islam

On a frigid Friday night last week when the Dhaka residents were about to retire into their slumbers, a white Toyota car screeched to a halt outside a high-walled, sprawling bungalow only yards away from an entrance to the Dhaka Cantonment.

The car jettisoned three VIP passengers, and the trio got whisked inside the living room of the fortress-looking compound. The guests were two senior political leaders from the main opposition party – BNP- and their courtship by a powerful spy master is meant to lure them away from their entrenched nationalist stronghold that BNP is, into a little known, newly formed political entity dubbed as the Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF).

Over the preceding months, the BNF has grown in size and facade from a mole hill to something like a diminutive mountain. Under the feisty, agile leadership of a renegade BNP leader named Barrister Nazmul Huda- who has fallen from the grace of the party leader Khaleda Zia for reasons that are best known to them alone - the party is growing more leafs and casting more shadows.
Among the leaders who joined Huda so far are BNP former cabinet ministers Jahanara Begum, a former Chittagong Mayor Aref Moinuddin, and a number of mid-ranking stalwarts. A little known editor of Moulana Bashani’s Haq Katha is learnt to be the lynchpin between the spy agency and Mr. Huda.

Most recruiting of BNP rebels and most of their deals were done inside the personal compound of a highly-placed intelligence officer of the country, and the game is a good old one of slicing and dicing the largest opposition party of the country as an archaic election strategy of the ruling AL to cling onto power by any means.

The top hierarchy of the government sources say, are pleased with the progress made so far by the spy agency to break the BNP’s backbone by luring electable rebels away and are claiming to have allotted a budget of Taka 120 crore to do so.

The BNP is sticking to its threat not to participate and lend legitimacy to general election unless the caretaker system - designed in the now annulled statute as an interim poll-time- dispensation - is reinstated.

The prolonged incarceration of BNP’s acting secretary general, Mirza Alamgir, now released on bail, is suspected to be aimed at extracting from the otherwise dedicated and suave politician a commitment to join the polls under a differently-registered party composed of his loyalists in the BNP, if not from the newly found BNF.

Alamgir, his close associates say, did not relent to the pressure, the enticement, and the torture meted out to him while in captivity. Upon being released, he simply said, “The Government is trying to crush the opposition into smithereens.”

Similarly, there are muted acknowledgements from a number of Jamat leaders that offers were made to them to stand away from their captive leaders being tried for alleged war crimes in return for allowing the new leadership a free hand to conduct politics and bag a substantial number of seats in the next parliament.

One Jamat leader went about saying that the life imprisonment of the Jamat leader Abdul Quader Mollah, instead of death by hanging, was made possible as a bait of higher sentence and possible rehabilitation, if Jamat leaders not to ally with the BNP in the next election, or after. The leader requested not to be named.

One of the main flaws in such a game plan of the government is not that the tactic may not work, but that the prescription seems to be offering wrong medicine for a disease that is much more structural than what meets the eye. There may not be an election even if the situation continues to deteriorate. If there is one, it may not concur with the algorithm being devised by the government.

This is because, notwithstanding the Awami League-leftist coalition-making during the 2008 election to form a government, the nationalist-Islamist compact of the BNP-Jamat denominations has undergone change of balance since.

The constitution of the war crime tribunals in 2010, and the arrest and the indictment of most of the senior Jamat leaders have changed the Islamist polity’s sense of direction broadening its ideological base. The BNP has also moderated itself phenomenally following the lessons learnt from the 2007 military intervention in politics.

Taking cues from the conducive external political ambiance stirred by the US’s support for the moderate Islamists in the Mid-East and the AL-led government’s increased estrangement with the USA and its allies, the Jamat managed to capitalize strongly on a war crime trial that has proven to be biased, influenced, and, statutorily and procedurally flawed.

The intransigence of the government in rectifying these pitfalls made the cry of the Islamists for justice more appealing to audiences within and without. These ground realities have been reinforced further by some other factors that are pushing the nationalist forces – belonging mainly to the BNP and the Jatio Party - to the brink.

Like in many other Muslim-predominant nations, Bangladesh politics too has now embraced, willingly or not, the vivid distinctiveness of a bipolarity seen only among the secularists and the Islamists of the Mid-East nations.

The battle line is drawn, and, it can only be transgressed with great peril. Under these circumstances, the crooked attempts to divide the BNP, and playing proxy with the JP under H.M Ershad, is not a stratagem that can hold waters. As matters stand in the political merry-go-round, Bangladesh appears headed for another rough ride over what seems like an irreconcilable extra-constitutional bump.

120 cr taka is about $15 million, not a big sum to spend for a spy agency of any size able country. Any specifics about the spy agency, is it our own DGFI, which has already been hijacked?

It is DGFI and it been hijacked. 120 cr taka is not for DGFI (spy agency) spending. This amount for luring some people from BNP with money and threat only. For that purpose its a sizable sum. Actual spending of DGFI is much higher given the extent of wholesale oppression and brutality going on inside and outside Bangladesh army.

You can break BNP all you want, fact of the matter is BNP is Khaleda Zia. People vote for Khaleda Zia, not Huda, not fakhrul and not some other joe shmoe. Before the election or ones the caretaker government is introduced, they will be all united. The reuniting force is simply getting back to power. All small time differences are settled when you show the 'mula' of a good position in the government.

The only way to break BNP is by assassinating Begum Khaleda Zia.

You can't buy much with 120 crore, trust me. If these leaders are that 'important' and 'powerful', they can make much much more ones BNP gets back into power.

What you said about KZ and BNP are true but that may not stop them trying to do that. Also, 120 cr is not a figure set in stone when awami League is looting billions. At the end none of these will work and indians and DGFI know it too. Indians and Awami goal is to pass through fair election demand using these deceptions and stay in power virtually uncontested with fragmented and weak BNP. There is also thinking that they may take KZ in jail and in such case break up drama will get some more wind just like indians/DGFI did during 1/11.

Indians set the trap by surround KZ with indian agents who are advising her not to go for movement and on the other end, indians are using DGFI to lure renegade/rouge elements from BNP. If KZ goes for movement some of these rouge elements around her would fall far indian set trap. This could be one reason KZ is not opting for immediate movement.

BAL has been trying heart and soul to get KZ in jail. You have no idea how hard BAL tried to frame KZ into that grenade attack case and they have failed. One of her small clases has been thrown out recently and there are no other cases that can used to get KZ back into jail.

RAW already has connections with most top leaders of BNP. Leaders in the top need connections in both, India simply can't bribe these leaders with money, not that these leaders are saints its just India doesnt have enough money to bribe them and can't guarantee them power. Nor do the leaders of BNP trust these agents of RAW, their betterment and self interest lies with BNP coming to power. The fascinating bit is India does not trust BNP and BNP does not trust India.

I know nazmul huda and family personally. He will not be able to do jack to BNP. He is far more interested in money than power. He does not have a solid base of support although he does know everyone. has been sidelined due to accepting the offer to lead BNP as part of the minus two push by the CG.

However I can see why nazmul huda would have been chosen. He comes from a family of businessmen who only entered politics to facilitate their business interest. He has no ideology and is a gun for hire. Unfortunately for him everyone knows his character too.

Definately KZ=BNP, although she is not very hands on and relies on a close group of advisors some of whom have done her some serious disservice. Here is also a critical weakness that BAL is seeking to exploit. Pay of a few advisors and BNP can be managed. Pay them well and they can create enough instability to crack open BNP. But whatever happens the Lady is secure in her position.

120cr..... BAL needs to ask Delhi for more money.....

It is too late to breakup BNP, only a few months left for the election. in fact the closer to the election the stronger BNP will get. You should see the hunger in the face of BNP walas

You are correct. BNP is in an enviable position, it is seeing its star rise without having to do anything. Some one from BNP was taunting AL that they can not manage JI how are the going to handle BNP.

But BNP must bide its time and show its strength at the appropriate juncture. Let BAL drown in its own quagmire. The ICT show will carry on for a while. Here's a prediction Ghulum Azam will be given death sentence just before the election to polarise public opinion. With the obvious international and national outcry BAL will position itself as the keeper of BDs 71 chetona. JI will become violent and the spectre of terrorism will be used to silence western critics. Once election is won Azam will win apeal and death sentence would be commuted to life imprisonment.

BNP must be ready for the trap.

Everybody knows BNP will win the next elections and then run Bangladesh for the next 60 months (5 years) just as BAL had for the previous 60 months (5 years). What will happen regardless of which of the two parties is in power is that non-partisan Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi organizations will continue to do what they have been doing for years.

- Textile industry will continue to expand.
- Walton BD our electronics company will continue to expand.
- Bashundara will continue to grow.
- The army will always be pro-China and continue its programme of indigenizing defence production.
- Our madrassas (Qawmi and Aaliyah) will continue to function as they always do.
- Our workers will continue to work in the gulf as they always do.
- BRAC will continue to do work as they always do.

So nothing that fundamental changes in the 60 month term of whichever of the two mafia-groups (BNP or Awami League) are in power, however it is only politically obsessed party members and activists who think Bangladesh and the entire universe changes depending on which idiot is in power in Dhaka.

Jamatis and their supporters act as if Bangladesh is about to collapse under this Awami government and that the next BNP government will see a complete transformation of Bangladesh and economic growth will hit 45% per year... and...
every Bangladeshi will be driving a ferrari because of a BNP government...

Bangladesh is not the property of stupid political parties but of us the normal Bangladeshi people (like me @madx @ShadowFaux @RiasatKhan etc) who do not support any party, and Bangladesh has powerful autonomous institutions that no Dhaka government can push around e.g. army, Deobandi Islamic scholars, BRAC etc.
