Taiwan to deploy obsolete air defense missile to Taiping

I would think such deployment has much more to do with the expansion of mainland China's naval presence in the region, than anything to do with Vietnam.
What Taiwan own is what we own. Why would we attack Taiping? Did you even notice Taiwan's island, Kinmen, is right next to the mainland but we did nothing?

This is definitely to keep a close eye on the little Viet. They took a couple islands in Spratly from the Phillipines. If the Vietnamese attack Taiwan, we will come to their aid and restore order.

I completely agree. Communists are cruel idealists. They would give up South Tibet after the victory, they would withdraw from Vietnam, etc. etc. It's a paradox that few normal humans would understand. Mongolia's independence was orchestrated by the Soviet Union. Nationalists are pretty straightforward and put national interests above and foremost. Nationalists are willing to be ally with anyone regardless of ideology or even offer concession if it's in national interest. Being ally with big powers is nothing to be ashamed of. But those communists would never understand. To them, I guess empty slogans of "world proletarians unite" is more important than national interests.

If not for the communists takeover of mainland China, Japan would have not been so successful after being arch nemesis of the U.S. etc, etc. The whole East Asia would have been totally different landscape. It's a cruel joke. But oh well, 60 years is very short time span in China's history, so lets just move on.

Also back to the topic, Vietnam stole couple of islands near Taiping Island during a storm back in 1970s or 80s, cannot remember the exact date! The soldiers went to Taiping Island then after the storm, the viets have stationed on those tiny islands already, lol. Vietnam now has most islands in South China Sea by stealing. This is why I believe Vietnam is the nastiest thorn in the whole East and Southeast Asia, far far worse than Japan. Japan is a model democracy today, while Vietnam is a thief that constantly yells, kicks around, whines, screams.

Ironically, CPC has defended China's national interests 100 times more than your beloved KMT.

The Outer Mongolia was independent in 1946, you need to find a valid excuse to blame CPC for this sh1t.

And are you trying to say that KMT never sought to cozy up with USSR?

You seem not to know your own country's history very well bro. if not you wouldnt say such a thing.:D

We don't need any foreigner to teach us the history about China.

Bro if you understand/know Asia well like i do, you will know your statement is completely wrong. It indeed has everything to do with Vietnam and even philippines, since they both claim this island. Funny enough, the chinese will even help the taiwanese in event of conflict between Taiwan and Vietnam over this island. Mind you Vietnam still holds most of the islands in Spratly islands, they even hold/controlled all the islands in paracel islands until the chinese took it from them after a bloody battle. You might not know, but Vietnam can be a bad boy, they are not angels like you think.:D:P
I like that though, todays world is meant for the strong, no place for the weak.:enjoy:

To put in human perspective, vietnam as a person would be the toughest pound for pound fighter. China is like a six feet tall man only able to pick on an unarmed five foot tall boy.

I agree Vietnam is a tough country. But don't belittle the Chinese so much bro. At least they fought the U.S/U.N to a stalemate in Korea, defeated India as well in less than a week, fought the soviets in border war to a no clear winner, and prevented Vietnam from conquering Thailand(though they failed to do that for Cambodia). Plus they ruled Vietnam for quite almost a century as well. so they are not that bad.;)

Anyway, the point is, had Vietnam had China's weight/power and status, then i agree Vietnam will have conquered the whole south east Asia. Even when China has the power, they dont know how to use it unlike little Vietnam.:D

You should check yourself before you wreck yourself mate. Don't need to thank me for the reminder. Also check your spelling/grammar, no one can understand you other than simple sentences.

that was under Mao and Deng, we vietnamese respect these guys that fought in war and know hardship. the current princelings in power know to send their kids to foreign school , buy overseas mansions and get mistresses. fighting is not in these guys blood.

@Okemos

"Giving up" South Tibet is a *military maneuver* because it was unholdable - better to consolidate gains than to lose it all. That was something the KMT never figured out and thus Chiang Kai Shek could control Shanghai, Nanjing, and everything else was held by warlords and generals. In what country does a president get kidnapped by his own generals because the president is scared of fighting against invaders?

When does a president approve a useless order to kill 1 million of his own citizens overnight to stall Japanese for a few days? 花园口决堤事件,check it. Who is truly cruel?

Never mind about Okemos, he is just a brainless KMT fanboy and a diehard CPC hater.

The only reason he came here is to irritate the Chinese members.

Taiwan is truly superpower!

No doubt about it.

the article is ridiculous, more propaganda than reality. we (Vietnam) have no plan to start a war in the south china sea, least against Taiwan. if anyone, it is commie China, that wants to see blood in the sea.

Concept art of Taiwan's future dock at Taiping (Photo courtest of Lin Yu-fang's office)

Taiwan is considering deploying the obsolete US-built RIM-72C Sea Chaparral to Taiping Island, the largest of the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, Lieutenant General Kao Tien-chung, deputy defense minister, told ruling Kuomintang legislator Lin Yu-fang on Oct. 1, according to our sister newspaper Want Daily.

After the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology modified the Sky Sword II air-to-air missile originally designed for Taiwan's F-CK-1 Ching-kuo fighter into a new version to be launched from naval warships, Lin suggested all RIM-72C Sea Chaparral missiles aboard the Republic of China Navy's six La Fayette-class frigates should be replaced. Lin then said that the defense ministry should then consider deploying missiles to Taiping.

Taiping, also called Itu Aba, is the largest island currently under the administration of Taiwan in the South China Sea. Although Taiwan was not part of the standoff between China and the Philippines over Scarborough Shoal in April 2012 or that between China and Vietnam over a Chinese oil rig deployed near the Paracel Islands in May, Lin suggested Taipei take a tougher stance in defending its territory in the South China Sea. He said that Taipei should not think of the territorial dispute in the South China Sea in the same way as the dispute over the Diaoyutai (Senkaku or Diaoyu) islands in the East China Sea since Taiping is under Taiwan's control.

Other legislators joined Lin to demand the government solidify the defense of Taiping. The island is currently manned by the ROC Coast Guard. This is not enough to defend it from a potential attack from Vietnam however, therefore the defense ministry should deploy more air defense missiles and weapons for anti-amphibious operations to the island, Lin said. At the same time, he suggested the government expand the naval port, airfield and other military facilities on the island.

Without aerial refueling aircraft, the Republic of China Air Force is unable to provide sufficient air support to the Taiping garrison. Vietnam said that it is capable of paralyzing the defense of the island in just 20 minutes. After that, it would take no more than an hour for the Vietnamese military to take control of the island.

The Viets are living in blissful ignorance?

These people seem to suggest that they are not from a communist country which Vietnam surely is。:D

And Vietnam is in many ways more communism than China。

Sold your souls to the Americans?

We call them the "rat of Asia" for a reason. LOL

Vietnam will beat taiwan anyday , don't you forget that.
Taiwan navy and air force is far superior to yours.(Refer to ROC Navy I remenbered a joke which ROC Navy is capable to blockade France coastline, lol.)But those Kidds and OHPs can easily clear out your navy in SCS.

.
Taiwan focus on confront China.
Our fishermen still take some exchange with garrison troops in Taiping.
They're quite nice.

Vietnam has no plan to conquer Thailand, pal !!! I'm insider.

.
ROC deploy air defense missile in SCS 1st, then PRC will be 2nd to deploy on most islands.

There will be all Chinese missiles in SCS. :partay:

I think Vietnam should be worried about this development, since Taiwan is militarizing the south China sea more and more. Moreover Vietnam still claims the Taiping islands as well. I think with Vietnam taking delivery of Diesel electric submarine from Russia will help Vietnam get an edge over Taiwans navy(since taiwan doesnt have any real submarine capability per say), though Taiwan has superior frigates/battle ships.

Also Taiwan(ROC) is the country that initiated/started with the 9 dash line which the communist just took over after they defeated the nastionalist and to this day their claim of China is even bigger than that of the communist(it includes mongolia and part of Siberia.lol) If anything Vietnam should be happy the ROC didnt prevail in China mainland, since had they prevailed then they would have taken control of all the islands in the south China sea by force longggg time ago from Vietnam and other ASEAN coutries, in fact there wouldnt even be a dispute today. So ironically its a good thing for Vietnam the communist won on the mainland.
actually we have all reasons to spank the taiwanese as they are the one who invented the 9 lines. the firepower of our navy soon surpasses theirs.
