Reiterating that the UN does not recognize Taiwan as a nation, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has emphasized that the region is only referred to as "Taiwan Province of China" in the UN. This position is based on UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, which was adopted in 1971 and expelled the representatives of the Republic of China ROC from the UN, recognizing the PRC as the only legitimate representative of China in the organization.

Since it settled the dispute over Chinese participation in the UN, Resolution 2758 marked a turning point in world affairs, although sovereignty of Taiwan was not specifically addressed in the resolution it essentially put an end to the ROC UN designation as a distinct state. China views this resolution as a confirmation of its claim that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory, with no separate status.

Wang Yi's assertion that Taiwan is not a country reflects China's consistent position on the "one-China principle." He emphasized that Taiwan has never been recognized as a sovereign state by the UN and will never be so in the future. This stance is supported by historical documents such as the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation, which stated that Taiwan should be returned to China following Japan's defeat in World War II.

The majority of nations acknowledge the PRC as Chinese only legitimate government and the international community generally upholds the one China concept, but Taiwan functions as a de facto autonomous state while not having official diplomatic recognition and several countries continue to have informal connections with it, particularly the United States has a complicated relationship with Taiwan, offering military support without official diplomatic connections.

Wang Yi's remarks highlight determination of China to achieve "peaceful reunification" while rejecting any attempts at Taiwan independence, even as tensions between the two countries persist, with China stepping up its military buildup near Taiwan and the United States continuing to serve as Taiwani principal arms supplier, the situation is still unstable, the difficulties of handling the Taiwan question, which continues to be a crucial topic in regional and international affairs are highlighted by the current diplomatic impasse.

In conclusion, Wang Yi's comments about Taiwan are consistent with Chinese long held view that Taiwan is an essential component of China rather than a separate nation, this position is a pillar of China's foreign policy and is backed by UN Resolution 2758, the international community is still negotiating the intricacies of the Taiwan issue while maintaining diplomatic relationships with both China and Taiwan as tensions remain high.
