The movie is based on historical events. Although I do think the"surgical strike" marketing is kind of cringy.

Tanhaji is unsung because he is not a brahmin but a low caste persion who is now called as "hindu" and owned by brahmins. The media shows Tanhaji as "hindu" - what does that even mean? even now no person of Tanhaji caste can be a priest which is reserved mostly for brahmins.
What bollywood is doing is exploiting the bravery of opressed hindus and turn in to anti muslim hydteria benefiting the brahmins.

If you go by their movies the Hindus were supermen

The mughal empire was overstretched and self dividing with numerous forces looking for their own regional control

The Marathas were a small fish who again took advantage of the void left after

Again their decimation at the hands of Abdali and then the British just shows how weak they actually we're where any foreign entity could enter and defeat them whilst they were busy abusing smaller fish in India
