A pretty standard dadao for comparison. The tactical one seems to be shorter and more angular. The blade is likely anodized black to prevent reflections.

Dadaos were heavy at around 3-4 Kg compared to other swords used with great effect during the Sino Japanese war. Both Chinese and Japanese used Bolt action rifles and had a dearth of any portable rapid firing weapons. While crudely manufactured the sheer weight of the dadao gave Chinese troops a definte advantage in hand to hand combat.

Practicality:

Pros

Extremely deadly as a hand to hand combat weapon.

Useful as a multitool in cutting foliage, firewood, and animals.

Gives a very unique part to Chinese forces.

Cons

Weight could be for more ammo, and other essentials.

Lets your enemy know who you are

Give your opinion.

Didn't MACV-SOG units in Vietnam used machete? It's quite good for cutting through dense jungles and as a close combat weapon.

Dadaos were used much more extensively and armed entire armies groups during the Sino Japanese war.

Dadaos are also typically far heavier then a machete

the stupid thing is the red arm badge.
in order to expose the troop to the enemies? obviously the leads of this small troop are stupid. i will not join this troop because they will be dead in a combat.
why don't they hold a red flag?

pretty sure that's a velcro patch for the photo shoot. you can peal it off in real combat.

on topic
i think those are machetes.

I think this is photo op. I doubt they would actually use this. As far as cutting wood. When you start a fire, cutting wood is the last concern or no concern at all, since child branches usually burn better especially the branches that have broken off and are dead.
You only need to start a small fire.
The only ones that use a large blade are Gurkhas and theirs is much smaller by comparison.

Honestly, if you are close enough to observe the red patch, the camouflage function would have been useless either way.

In wartime they switch out the colorful badges with a less noticeable badge.

Like this.

Very traditional. Dao is the equivalent(culturally) to Katar to India.

So anyone else think having a dadao is F**king badass?

Its pretty f'n badass, though I don't how practical this is these days

They are recon troops. The large knife is good for clearing vegetation and can be used as a survival tool. It can replace lots of other equipments.
It's better to overdo than be inadequate.

The objective of war is to kill, not to look slim with that little special forces knife.

More weight = more striking force

camouflage is overrated.
movement is more important.
I don't care how well you fit into the background, but once you move, you give your position away.
Humans notice motion more then they notice color.
That little red patch at 50 meters is not going to be visiable. and at 50 meters, the enemy is already too close.
this is nothing more than a photo op for the PLA. The real PLA gets dirty hopefully.
