T-129 Atak & Turkish Attack Helicopter Programs

Why ATAK does have 20 instead of a 30mm cannon?

20mm Ammunition is lighter.....and they must have thought it was sufficient for purpose - i.e to be used against terrorist PKK.

How does a 20mm ammunition actually works? Will it also deliveres damage to a target in a range of 1 to 2 meters?

actually 30mm is great for pkk. as you can see in apache videos its very effective. but t-129 need more power for 30mm because it cant carry enough 20mm. 500x20mm not enough.

You dont need more then 500 rounds when the cannon is accurate enough.. But is it accurate enough to hit at least with 1 of the 5 rounds you fire..

You can check Apache videos.. they are not accurate.. there are videos that for a single guy, apache spent a lot of ammunition and still couldnt finish the target..

Instead, 20mm is very accurate.

30mm is good for huge wars, against APC or even some old Russian tanks as it hits from top..

Turkey needed it against terorist..

30mm cannon is too heavy too carry and also as purpose for the atak helicopter and this actually already discussed here in pk defence

The cannon is there for "soft targets" and the 20mm is great as it'll easily cut people in half and destroy unarmored vehicles, which is what it is for... For heavy armored vehicles (like tanks) it has the UMTAS and for anything in between it has Cirit laser guided rockets.

20mm is the optimal variant for the design of the helicopter right now. You must make the balance between firepower and performance while the performance is crucial for our environment in the operational areas.

Agreed. 30mm is too heavy for the T-129 and an overkill for our purposes.

most of the time our choppers firing indirect shots. because of that we need more ammo.

Apaches 30mm gun is not as same as lands vehicles 30mm calibers.
Apache caliber 30x113mm
CV90, Puma or Tulpar:) have 30x173mm caliber gun.

4 is ATAKs caliber.

Neither the 20mm nor the 30mm is a sniper gun, nor are they meant to be. These are called "cannons" for a reason. The rounds hit solid surfaces and fragment, causing residual damage to nearby enemy whom can only sustain a limited amount. More often than not, the gunner points it at an enemy (or a group) and the cannon "beats" an area with a radius of up to 50 meters from the center, depending on distance, wind, etc. The fragmentation from about 10-20 rounds is usually enough to kill everyone standing within that CEP.

The video below is 30mm fire from an AH-64 but the 20mm is the same idea.

Various kinds of 20mm diameter rounds.
