Assad is a beast .So was Saddam . But Iraq under saddam was light years ahead of where it is now . Same story is being repeated in syria . I wish GCC countries with their rose tinted glass could wake up to this reality . They are the ones bankrolling west to fight their war right from 1st gulf war ( even before that if we consider iran-iraq) war .
kurdish autonomous region in the north east.
The US says there will be no autonomy for Kurds in Syria. Reason is Syrian Kurds border Turkey unlike Iraqi Kurds who do not border Turkey. Autonomy of Kurds in Syria will encourage autonomy of Kurds in Turkey. This is something Turks will never allow.
newsflash Turkey borders Iraqi Kurdistan
Turks probably would not like another Kurdish autonomous region to deal with in Syria but you can't help but think it will come to fruition considering the Kurds are Nato's best allies against isil at the moment. Once isil are defeated I am pretty sure they will get their reward from the west.
Currently Western countries and Turkey have a love-hate relationship. Of course there is nothing stopping western countries turning on the kurds later on but it seems unlikely given their strategic position against Iran, the Arabs and potential turkish expansionism. In the end of the day Western countries want full hegemony over the middle east.
Baath party in Syria will never allow Kurds to have autonomy.
They will considering the situation now !!
Kurds are only 9% of Syria's population. After the war Assad could easily crush Kurds with Russia and Iran Indo Europeans.
Assad and Kurds have pretty beautiful status quo . Only people attacking Kurds apart from ISIS are Turkey ..
Legally, Kurds are not even allowed to speak Kurdish in Syria. Baath party is Arab national socialist party. Very hostile to Kurds.

Why does US need treacherous ally like Turkey who supports, funds and benefits from ISIS, while Kurds are the only reliable ground force seriously fighting ISIS? This puzzles me.
