A well equipped Mig-31BM supported by AWACS can hit Turkish F-16s from a distance where 16s radar will not be able to track or engage 31 even if 16 is supported by AWACS, because 31 can fly high and track and can also engage targets at low to medium altitudes at above 150km distance.

Only we have awacs and not syria, and tracking target from great distance means showing yourself:-).

Buying junk equipments will not help syria...

Syria to me needs ground attack and gunship helicopters.

They need to win against foreign backed terrorists.

Which variant of Mig-31s???

Syria reportedly receives MiG-31 interceptors from Russia - IHS Jane's 360

@gambit how potent it will be for Syria and how they can use it in current threat scenario??
Like the article said...

...high-altitude interceptor is probably of limited use right now.
I see this as more of an territorial airspace deterrence than utility for ground support, and assuming the article is true, the small quantity make the MIGs more a symbolic gesture than tactically useful.

The Syrian Arab Army have received 6 new super sonic MIG-31s along with 16 newly trained Syrian pilots to fly these exceptional aircraft, apparently the purpose is to defend Syrian territories from Turkish or Israeli jets.
Moreover recently USA had deployed 6 F-16 to turkey to fight ISIS.

I cannot post the link because of my rank but its available in syria-scope website and anna-news.
Wikipedia has also mentioned 6 MIG-31 in Syrian air force inventory

Only six? Really? Only six? Like that's going to deter the Turks and Israelis?

It's just waiting for F 16 with AIM 120 and the story ends. Such stupid decision to purchase this jet. I think mig 29 could be a better choice.

AIM 120D with range of 97 miles was introduced into service last year, not sure which countries have it. The C version was 57 miles.
A mig 31 carrying the latest A33 missile can easily engage targets at 100+ nautical miles, and up to 180 miles depending on which Radar and R33 version is used in the mig 31.

Israel has repeatedly struck at Syrian army positions with stand off weapons from Lebanon at a range of less than 50 nautical miles. Russia has spoken out and filed complaints against Israel for repeatedly violating Syrian sovereignty, but the Israeli's have no reason to stop and their operations suffer no risks from these strikes. The Mig-31 could change that.

The Aviationist » Examining Israeli Air Force Weaponeering in the Damascus Strike

If it is true that Israeli fighters remained over Lebanon during the strike, it raises interesting questions regarding the choice of weapons used in the raid. The distance from the Lebanese border to Damascus prevents the use of JDAM series weapons or Paveway series Laser Guided Bombs. However, by examining the IAF order of battle, it can be inferred that the Israelis likely utilized the Rafael Popeye standoff missile to strike these targets. The IAF currently utilizes three weapons that possess the range and precision targeting capabilities necessary for the Damascus raid. The Popeye, with a reported 48 nm range, could easily be launched from inside Lebanese airspace and fly the approximately 30 nm to strike Damascus. Additionally, the end-game EO/IR targeting and large 750 lb warhead makes the weapon a logical choice.

looks like Syria is getting the D or E model based on early reports
-It's not so related to Israel but mostly to turkey and usa , .
In 2007, Russia and Syria signed two agreements worth 1 billion dollars for the supply of MiG-29M and MiG-31. The deliveries of the MiG-29M’s are underway, but those of the MiG-31’s were reportedly delayed because of pressure from Israel.
The aircraft recently arrived at Mezze Airbase on the outskirts of Damascus
can't someone use google Earth and see what's at Mezze airbase? : )

I'm lazy ; )
If all the Sat pics are from 2014 then not much help. Can someone please contact the United States Dept. of defense and ask them for more recent photo's. Lets say, past 72 hours. ; )

come to think of it Mezzeh is unlikely, Dumayr, Kahlkala , or Homs (mig 25) is where their other fixed wing assets are stationed

Never underestimate your enemy "first rule of war" and Russia can send its AWACS to support Mig-31 & Mig-29M combo which will be supported by S-300 SAM and this combo if properly deployed and utilized with good tactics can bring any intruding jet down (only 5th gen is exempted) even if it is supported by AWACS because Mig-31 & S-300 can hit targets at long distances while Turkey don't have similar to defend against them.

Yes yes you are right . the best US missile has the range of 97 miles according to you but the Syrians got something which can target from 180 miles. Now let me tell you something you never go complete retard which you did here .I am not sure why the missile don't have 500 miles range, because in reality none of these will work as what is being quoted by the manufacture. You always look at the no escape zone of the missile not 200-300 miles. As for AIM 120 it's simple the best, no Russian BVR can match it. Russian BVR has yet to score a kill against AIM 120. Come back when that happens.

that's the sticking point isn't it, "if properly deployed" . For whatever reason, we never see Russian technology meet up to it's ratings or theoretical potential, not since Vietnam. Is it because the Russians have never fully supported their equipment like they did in Vietnam or is it all just old/obsolete, or both?
So far we have seen Syrian hard targets pounded with impunity by Israel and many of their aircraft shot down by the Turk's, with only 1 old F-4 lost on the opposing side.

Now let me tell you something you never go complete retard which you did here .
who pissed on your Felafel? There's no need to be rude, this discussion means absolutely nothing and it's just for fun. When you call someone a "retard" its no longer much fun.
