Syria is looking to sell the oil it can no longer export to Europe to Russia, China and other non-Arab countries, its finance minister said on Wednesday.

The European Union, the biggest buyer of Syrian crude oil, banned EU imports of the country's oil on Saturday to put pressure on President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria, which exports around 110,000-150,000 barrels a day of crude mainly to Germany and Italy, is now looking for other buyers.

"We will either refine it ... or sell it directly to Russia, China or any country that accepts to buy our extra oil," Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad al-Jleilati said.

"Otherwise we will keep it as reserves," he added, without explaining whether that meant not pumping it from Syria's oil fields or pumping into storage sites.

He said the Syrian government was not concerned about sanctions and that they would have no direct impact on economy.

The big winner from the US led sanctions on Iran was China. Chinese companies filled the void left by the Europeans companies. We might see the samething again on a smaller scale.

These days Resources and Money talks, I am a very big supporter of China because they stopped any type of intervention against Syria, Thank you China and Chinese.

Great news, thank you Syria.

Yeah, we are now the largest buyer of Iranian oil on the planet. :) And I'm sure Iran is happy as well, since I doubt they would want to sell oil to the nations in the West that are actively trying to hurt their economy.

Venezuela is also a big one, there have been some ridiculous estimates of the size of Venezuelean oil reserves. Those estimates apparently push Venezuela up to having the #1 largest oil reserves on the planet.

China doesn't hide selfish strategic interventions behind humanitarian masks.

That said I hope the bloodshed ceases soon and things get resolved peacefully.

Only 3000 Syrians dead so far, it can`t go on much longer, right?

All deaths are sad, and there have been many deaths all over the world, mostly to things like malnutrition and disease... but also due to the many wars that have been waged in this past decade alone.

All we can do, as a developing country, is try to improve the livelyhoods of our own people. In this case by gaining access to markets and resources, in order to fuel our economic growth.

Choosing a side means ignoring the artocities of one side, in favour of the other side. China has a limited presence in most of the world, making such big choices right now would be overstepping ourselves.

I understand the logic behind China`s decision makers... China and Chinese come first.

Too bad all the wrong people got most of the resources though.

I got Family in Damascus and there very strong Assad Supporters, Syria is a place where Muslims and Christians and other minorities have co existed and become friends , Our fear is the Gulf Countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE try to bring Syria into their Circle, we have seen what Saudi Money and influence did to Iraq as well as Pakistan and we don't wish that on anyone.

and you think the sltn to Syria's current problems are sanctions that do nothing but hurt people? The number of people who died in Iraq because of the sanctions dwarfed the amount that died directly at the hands of Saddam Hussain.

These deaths are very sad and the government is starting dialogue, however any type of intervention in Syria will not be taken lightly, we need to stay Away from the Gulfs states and Israel, Saudi Money & influence is bad for everyone, staying Friends with Iran, Russia, China, and Hezbollah is a must.

Welcome to the real world, I didn't see any tears flowing for Libya during the good years of the Gaddafi regime where France and UK plied him with weapons to the hilt.

Western nations are just as hypocritical and if not more so, only difference is their bowl of salad has a better dressing.

Zionists would love noting better then see Dr. Assad fall, they want to intervene in Syria, But unlike Gaddafi, Dr. Assad has supporters Christians, Alwais, Sunni's, Secularists, and Assad Loyalists, the media won't show you that will they ?? The reason my family moved from Syria was Financial issues, other then that we loved Syria and Assad.
