'Syria downed Turkish jet with Iran-made weapon'

Meanwhile, the Seattle Times quoted American security officials as saying that Syria's downing of the Turkish jet showed its military is capable of mounting a sophisticated defense against potential enemies, thus "complicating a Libyan-style intervention."

Meaning We only Fight against defenseless.

Having said that Their is 2 many news sources in this one article almost like cut and paste to create a divide.

why? b/c you say so?

because

the max range of a a 100 MM AAA is 13 miles

the odds of a AAA hitting a jet at all are very very low and the odds of it hitting anything at max range are near zero. That is nothing more than a new model of WWII technology. If you had 100 of them firing at a jet you might if you are very lucky get a hit, with just one? nope There is a reason most countries have abandoned large caliber AAA, it doesn't work. The only good thing about it is that it is cheap. Then you can add in the fact that the video syria claims to have of the shootdown shows no large caliber weapons firing.

edit: actually according to iran it only has a 13KM range, well short of where the jet was hit.

What Do We Know About Syria’s Air Defenses?

So, what has the Syrian air defense corps been upgrading its old SA-2s and SA-6s with? Well, rumors about that the RF-4 was shot down by a brand new Russian-made SA-22 system. The SA-22 is a mobile antiaircraft system the equipped with its own target acquisition and tracking radars and it carries 12 medium range 57E6 radio-guided surface-to-air missiles and two 30 mm autocannon. Yeah, it’s a nasty little system designed to protect ground troops, cities and even more advanced, high-altitude surface to air missile systems.

Firstly the exact position of where the Phantom was hit: 35 48.22N – 35 32.21E which is 13NM from the coast of Syria and therefore in international airspace. This means the aircraft had violated the Syrian airspace but, according to the Turkish authorities, it had already left it when it was shot down at 11.58 local time.

Secondly according to the text of the letter, was flying at 7,400 feet on its own (not part of a pair) and after being hit turned towards the Syrian coast and hit the sea at 35 48.26N – 35 37.59E some 8NM from the coast.

Again the letter states the plane was transmitting its IFF (indentification, friend or foe) transponder and that Turkey has captured radio communications that demonstrates Syrian units knew this was a Turkish plane. The letter also alluded that Turkey may have proof from third party radar stations that could have recorded the route flown by the combat plane.

Noteworthy, the letter does not say that the RF-4ETM (this is the correct designation) was downed by a missile. However, if it was really flying so far from the coast (13 NM) and at medium altitude (7,400 ft), it could not be reached by anti-aircraft artillery flak.

regarding this news, some say it was mesbah 1, but I think it was the older Iranian 100mm AAA.
we need to send a few hundred of the much more advance saeer version to syria. they will deal with all the NATO cruise missile torks have very easily.
