Srinagar, Oct 18: Veteran Kashmiri pro-freedom leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has castigated the puppet government of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir for planning to build a metalled road through the northern forests of Kashmir for the Hindu pilgrims who visit the Amarnath cave shrine every year from different parts of India.
Geelani, in a press conference held at his residence in Srinagar, said that this construction was a blatant violation of local forest laws and would cause an irreparable harm to the fragile ecology of the area. He also displayed some of the photos of this road construction to the media persons attending the press conference.
Accusing the puppet state government of being hand in glove with the Hindu Shrine board which is responsible for managing both the cave shrine as well as the annual pilgrimage, he threatened to launch a massive agitation after the coming Eid against any such move by the puppet authorities.
He also demanded that the Hindu Shrine board be dissolved and the pilgrimage management be handed over to local Kashmiri Hindus.
The Amarnath Yatra, an annual pilgrimage of the HIndus has been a continous source of controversy in the occupied region with Kashmiri pro-freedom leadership accusing India for using it as a tool to fulfill her imperialistic designs vis a vis Kashmir and to pave the way for Kashmirs integration with the Indian state. The duration of this pilgrimage used to be limited to about a fortnight until a few years back when it was extended to two months. This move enjoyed the backing of the Hindu Fundamentalist organizations of India who had been demanding it for a long time.
It is pertinent to mention that in 2008, around 117 protesting youth were killed by the Indian occupying forces in a two month long agitation called by the Pro-freedom leadership against a similar kind of provocative order by the local puppet government where in 99 acres (0.40 km2) of forest land was to be transferred to the Amarnath Yatra Board for setting up temporary shelters for the Hindu pilgrims.
