The Dhaka Opera House Complex will provide citizens with a concert hall, theatre hall, and studio theatre hall.

Hatirjheel, a former garbage dumping zone and safe haven for criminals where people were afraid to go even during the day, has been transformed into a centre of attraction and entertainment for Dhaka dwellers and foreign tourists.

In order to further develop this lakefront area into an international-standard entertainment hub,, the government has taken an initiative to construct an opera house on 20 acres of land in West Ulan and Siddheswari areas.

Drawing inspiration from the Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most recognizable architectural marvels and a Unesco world heritage site, the Dhaka Opera House Complex will provide citizens with a concert hall, theatre hall, and studio theatre hall.

Other amenities will include a large open stage, a recording studio, a gallery, and a number of dedicated makeup and rehearsal rooms. There will also be film centres for cinema enthusiasts and a training centre for the development of young artists.

For the convenience of visitors, the designers are planning to construct a children's corner, an archive, a museum, and food court within the complex.

There will also be souvenir shops where visitors can find items portraying Bangladesh's history and tradition, and a multi-story car park.

To house all this, a large aesthetic building will be constructed on 10 acres of the acquired land while the remaining space around the complex will be open.

Hatirjheel Project Officer Major ASM Sadique Shahriar said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has accepted the proposed design for the project.

“The land has been selected for the project, but the acquisition process is still to be completed,” he said.

The project will be implemented by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on behalf of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

The design team will be led by the renowned Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron Basel Ltd, which developed the
New Hall exhibition centre in Basel and the new stadium for the French football club, FC Girondins de Bordeaux.

Shilpakala Academy Director General Liaquat Ali Lucky said he spoke to three chief architects of the firm regarding this issue.

The project cost has been estimated at Tk6,124 crore and the implementation time has been set at five years, starting from January 2018 to June 2023.

However, Liaquat refused to comment further on this until they prepare an official report on the project, which is scheduled to be published next week.

Please keep your cool. What do you expect from a country where different authorities are not required to coordinate their works while working in the same place. The authority that built the Hatirjheel lake had no jurisdiction over the transmission towers. So, these remain.

It may also mean that there was no overall planning, but only the piecemeal works. This is why waterlogging issue is also not going to be solved. There are seven authorities to do the job, but, as I said, there will not be any coordination of works. The best way is to delegate responsibility to one authority to do the job.

Before making such claim do you have any idea that towers are for high voltage substation? It is not like if you don't like you can take it out and put in a different location. You need to maintain certain distance between each tower to avoid line sag. In addition to that to relocate the tower you will need new space, who will provide that when most of the surrounding areas are privately owned and to acquire those land how much money will be required. For high voltage transmission line you need to maintain certain distance from civilians to avoid harmful impact.

Yes - there are folk operas as well as formalized higher echelon opera formats. The theatrical tradition in East Bengal stretches way before the two recent millenniums.

Folk operas (popular entertainment) fall into 'Pala', 'Jatra', 'Jari', 'Sari' and other regional variations and categories.

Modern theater as practiced in Bangladesh borrows heavily from radical communist and secularist traditions in pre-and-post WWII Europe.

Transliterations and theatrical adaptation of works by Sartre and Bertolt Brecht are very popular as political commentary and are heavily attended by the educated populace.

You can use an opera house for pretty much anything..seminars,theater,concert,weddings..its basically a glorified convention center...its a good initiative....Dhaka needs spaces like this.

I’ve been to one, although my case is different. I feel alienated to my parents culture

You can use an opera house for pretty much anything..seminars,theater,concert,weddings..its basically a glorified convention center...its a good initiative....Dhaka needs spaces like this.

Yah I agree. In Singapore they have the "Esplanade" and its not really much opera per se going on, but mostly all kind of other cultural shows/performances that are visiting or created locally.

Maybe BD can relabel it as "national theatre/convention centre" or something more apt to its larger role.

Actually coming to think of it, good friend of mine had his marriage cpl years ago at the National Canadian convention centre....so yeah its pretty multi-functional.

This BD design looks a bit meh though...if its so centrally located in prime real estate, there should be some better aesthetic flair.
