STOCKHOLM (AP) — A Swedish man who was arrested after trying to split atoms in his kitchen said Wednesday he was only doing it as a hobby.

Richard Handl told The Associated Press that he had the radioactive elements radium, americium and uranium in his apartment in southern Sweden when police showed up and arrested him on charges of unauthorized possession of nuclear material.

The 31-year-old Handl said he had tried for months to set up a nuclear reactor at home and kept a blog about his experiments, describing how he created a small meltdown on his stove.

Only later did he realize it might not be legal and sent a question to Sweden's Radiation Authority, which answered by sending the police.

"I have always been interested in physics and chemistry," Handl said, adding he just wanted to "see if it's possible to split atoms at home."

.....and the Idiot Americans are worried about nukes on the loose in Pakistan?????.....what a crock of crap!!!! :disagree:

. .
so in europe one can buy uranium and the reactor components without any check, and can perform nuclear experiments instead of learn all them in university, it shows how secure europe is for these kinds of people

.
Watch the documentary "Countdown to zero"....it shows how easily fissile material can be shipped to US...if any terrorist obtains fissile material, then making a bomb out of it is not difficult.

.
And the ASSHOLES(read Americans) are worried about Pakistani nukes.

And THIS asshole ^^ believes the Swede was toying with materials and methodologies that would lead to a nuclear bomb. What the guy was doing was the equivalent in chemistry of growing pretty crystals with a "Magic grow-crystal toy kit" vs. institutional teams of pHD's involved in advanced polymer or pharmaceutical research.

Not sure how you connected a home scientist enthused about nuclear science, with American foreign policy. Quite a leap.

From BBC:

Mr Handl, who is 31 and unemployed, told the BBC World Service he had bought the radioactive materials on the internet and from Germany.

Not to mention the swedes will do justice in this case and not declare this misguided person a national hero and pardon him hush hush, like some countries do to their nuke black marketeers!

America does not need to worry abt this swedish guy as the swedes are capable of doing it and must concentrade their efforts in parts incapable of responsible self governance.

Not starting america bashing here.....but in reply to the bold part...The same way as the American policy makers suspect donkey riding cave dwellers are able to nuke their cities with some nuclear bombs they will carry in their back packs.

.
that guy was totally innocent!

It was good he wasnt a muslim...or it was a headline news round the world....and countries should have raised their threat level and armies had gone into spending spree on buying radiation protective suits...and CIA chief had resigned..and analysts on news channels had somehow related the incident to Ramazan... :woot:

well,
if those " donkey riding cave dwellers" can hijack and crash a few airliners to two sky-scrappers and a nice building housing the MoD,
they have the rights to doubt that their cities will be nuked
