What's new

Swedish climber and skier Fredrik Ericsson dies on K2

RIP to our guest, who risked his life to traverse a very rewarding yet dangerous peak --2nd highest in the world and one that has claimed many other precious lives

surely, he knew the risks involved; but he loved the outdoors and doing what he perhaps did best

condolences to family and loved ones

I have a Question , What is the Full name of K2

locally known as Chogory....

K just stand for Karakoram

Doe it simply means 2nd highest peak in the world or is it something different

perhaps, not sure....

but it is the undisputed most dangerous and tricky peak to climb in the world....many have died

there were 1 or 2 hollywood movies (fiction) which took place at K-2; i think one of the movies was actually called ''K2''

No it doesnt mean second highest, in fact it is second in sequence of Karakorum range.

The name K2 is derived from the notation used by the Great Trigonometric Survey. Thomas Montgomerie made the first survey of the Karakoram from Mount Haramukh, some 130 miles (210 km) to the south, and sketched the two most prominent peaks, labelling them K1 and K2.
The policy of the Great Trigonometric Survey was to use local names for mountains wherever possible and K1 was found to be known locally as Masherbrum. K2, however, appeared not to have acquired a local name, possibly due to its remoteness.

K2 is magnificent, and is a natural pride for Pakistan. The so-called "Hillary route" to Everest is a well-trod trail that even children and blind people have negotiated. K2, only real mountaineers need apply.

Any mountain above 8,000 meters is still an impressive accomplishment, and for those unfamiliar with such extreme climbing, John Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" is a good read and will give you a feel for what it is like to struggle along at those altitudes, each step an agony.
