What's new

swati arrested again

Yes.

RECAP time.

Food for thought time.

According to an insertion 500A in the Pakistan Penal Code Act 1860, whosoever intentionally ridicules, brings into disrepute or defames the armed forces or member of the armed forces shall be guilty of the offence. It will be punishable with two years imprisonment or Rs0.5 million fine or with both.

IN a country where free speech is increasingly facing restrictions, a National Assembly panel’s approval of a bill that seeks to criminalise criticism of the armed forces is bound to generate further misgivings. The bill, which has the endorsement of the interior ministry, was introduced by PTI lawmakers as a response to the growing criticism of the armed forces, some members of which have come under public scrutiny for their alleged interference in matters of governance.

Our politicians are so farsighted.

Thought Experiment:

Let's say this pathetic colonial law didn't exist, and Swati did the same --- would Bajwa not ask his deep state to still violate Swati? The point is that Swati would have been punished not because it is or isn't law but because 'how dare he criticize our overlords.'

Hint: The Armed Forces are subservient to the elected government. The oath is to the Constitution, which supersedes any commitment to follow orders within the institution. Yet we know that's not how things actually work.

So, bringing up the law when the Establishment is totally unaccountable in real terms doesn't really address the core criticism against the Establishment. I'm sure you're aware of the de jure v. de facto difference in constitutional vs. actual powers.

The pace at which we are going, Pakistan will be becoming a banana republic and defaulting in no time.

This country has gone to the dogs.

To the boomers (crooks and duffers), keeping absolving yourself from any wrongdoing and wait for a day when your own house is on fire.
