*SWAT - At least 15 Pakistani paramilitary soldiers and five militants were killed in fighting that began on Tuesday in the northwestern Swat Valley, police said.

*SWAT - Security forces foiled a suicide attack and destroyed an explosive-laden vehicle in Swat's Kabal district, a militant stronghold in the valley.

*Bajaur - Members of a pro-government militia, or lashkar, set fire to 20 houses of militants in the Bajaur on the Afghan border, a paramilitary official said, while artillery fire by Pakistani security force killed seven militants.

The Pakistani military has said it has killed about 1,100 militants in fighting in Bajaur since August but there has been no independent verification of that casualty estimate.

ISLAMABAD: The three arrested members of a militants’ gang especially deputed by Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan have disclosed that RAW has been funding suicide bomb attacks in Pakistan and that the Indian agency has funneled Rs 680 million through its links with the Afghan secret agency.

The gang of three persons have brazenly admitted that they belong to the group of persons who had been deputed to ‘destabilise democratic Pakistan’ with the sole purpose of ‘enforcement of Shariah’ in the country.

Operators of an intelligence agency, working beyond the call of their duty, came into contact with a source ready for a tip-off against a reward and led to the arrest of Khurram Ishtiaq, Ghulam Mustafa and Shamim. The persons had been working under Qari Hussain, second-in-command to Baitullah Mehsud. All the three had been arrested on Aug 13 this year while they were on the prowl for a target. The militants had been arrested ‘red-handed’ as they possessed complete suicide kits, including two jackets and 70kg of explosives and detonators.

The accused were hardened militants and took a lot of time to break in and make confessions. They revealed that Qari Hussain had been working to help three adjutants—Farukh Usman alias Shahjee, Tayyab alias Baba; Ustad, the trainer to destabilise democratic government.

It is disconcerting to see that some friends at this Forum genuinely think that Pakistan Army is engaged in combat against a real “Enemy” and establishing writ over “Enemy Territory”. Swat, Bajaur, Waziristan are all parts of Pakistan. The so-called extremists are all Pakistanis, committed to the ideology and integrity of Pakistan to a greater degree than non-Pakistani residents (NPR) of the burger family kind.

Lets not kid ourselves. Pakistani forces are deployed on our soil against our own citizens as part of our government’s commitment with the US to provide gun fodder to the War on Terror. It’s the mechanism through which our political and military leaders score brownie points with their benefactors. Visible victims are the simple minded zealots (Taleban) and the poor Jawans and Havildars of our forces. By far the greatest number killed, injured and displaced is the innocent civilians trying to eke out a living under crushing poverty. Having 30% of Bajaur as internally displaced persons is the greatest national shame.

Using the armed forces against internal insurgency is the sure shot way of destroying our conventional armed forces. Our conventional power posture against India has weakened to a point where our Military leaders are calling for goals substitution; India is now a great friend, the primary mission is no more defenses of our borders, but the “elimination of extremism”.

Ideology or patriotism aside, we are losing on Real Politik as well. Our economy is in free fall. Our internal costs in fighting the war on terror is perhaps US$ 8-10 b / year. We are getting paltry reimbursables of about US$ 1.5 b / year from the US. A tiny country like Georgia gets about US$ 4.5 b as compensation for its follies, without losing a nail in the GWOT. We, after having sacrificed thousands of lives are asked to seek help from IMF! Is that our “Auqat”?

I know it is very difficult to digest truth.

No government or leader can claim that he has made no mistakes

15 die as people clash with militants in Swat

MINGORA: Fifteen people were killed and 12 others injured in a fierce clash between local militants and members of a local Jirga in Matta Tehsil of restive Swat Valley on Sunday. The militants also captured 70 Lashkaris, led by Pir Samiullah, in Aghal area when they were returning after attending a Jirga.

The Lashkaris were returning after attending a Jirga in Wenai area. The incident sparked a fierce clash between the militants and the armed Lashkar. Reports pouring in from the area said three militants, including a commander of Peuchar area, Shamsher alias Muhabat, and 12 members of the local Lashkar lost their lives in the clash. The other two militants shot dead were identified as Barkat and Amjad.

The slain elders of the Jirga include Afareen, Bahramand, Aziz, Mumtaz, Akbar Khan, Ayub, Bar Kamal, Afzal, Ajmal, Sheena, Yar Zameen and Hayatullah. Over a dozen other people, who were injured in the clash, were shifted to various hospitals.

It may be added here that the slain persons of the Jirga included elders and notables of the area. An armed Lashkar was raised after a failed attempt by the Taliban to kidnap Pir Samiullah a couple of months ago.

Spokesman for the Swat chapter of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Muslim Khan confirmed the kidnapping of 70 people of the Jirga, who were locked in a school in Chinglai area. He claimed that the Lashkaris attempted to fire at Taliban and 12 of them were killed when the Taliban returned the fire. He said earlier the Jirga had promised that Pir Samiullah would not return to the area and the Taliban, therefore, spared him.

In Sambat village close to Matta town, unknown armed men shot dead five persons, including two militants, who were standing outside a barber shop and injured two others. The assailants who came in a car sprayed the militants with bullets. This also led to the death of three civilians identified as Aslam, Namdar and Saeedullah, who were present in the shop. The slain Taliban were identified as Waheedullah and Janan. The injured civilians were shifted to a Matta hospital.

In Totano Bandai area, militants injured a soldier in an attack on a checkpoint. The attackers fled after retaliatory fire of the forces. In another incident, a man identified as Shah Hussain, sustained injuries when he came under fire from the security forces in Dewlai area.

Meanwhile, the security forces arrested 50 people during a search operation in Koza Bandai area. On the other hand, gunship helicopters also targeted militants’ positions in the Gwalerai area but no causality was reported in the operation.
