Swaraj’s suggestion on Gita against secularism: NCP, SP

The Nationalist Congress Party and Samajwadi Party on Monday slammed External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s push to declare Bhagavad Gita as a national scripture, saying it goes against the secular nature of the Constitution.

The Sharad Pawar-led NCP said all faiths should be treated equally and no person has the right to hurt the religious sentiments of others.

“I am a Hindu and proud of my religion’s rich heritage. But does that mean I have the right to hurt the sentiments of other religions? All religions should be treated equally. BJP, by making such comments, is only trying to provoke people of other religions. We are a secular nation and it is very unfortunate they [BJP] have taken the first step of changing the secular fabric of our Constitution,” NCP leader Jitendra Awhad told reporters.

SP too slammed BJP and said if the holy book of one religion can be accorded a national status, so can be the book of other faiths.
“Gita is a religious book. If you can accord it national importance, why can’t you do the same with the Quran and Bible too? This is a secular nation. We should respect all faiths but we cannot accord national status to any book. SP strongly criticises her [Ms. Swaraj] statement,” the party’s Maharashtra unit President Abu Azmi said.

“BJP has not been brought to power in the name of religion but for development, to eradicate corruption and bring black money back. They should concentrate on these issues,” the SP legislator said.

Speaking at a function in Delhi on Sunday, Ms. Swaraj had pressed for the Centre to declare the Bhagavad Gita as a ‘Rashtriya Granth’ (national scripture), a demand which sparked a controversy.

Sir,Shimad Bhagawat Gita was,is and always will be the national scripture of India(a country of more than 80% Sanatan Dharmic followers) irrespective of the fact whether or not it gets declared officially as one.Bhagawat Gita has always been a part of the culture and tradition of the majority of the population and hence i feel that there is absolutely no need to declared it officially as the National Scripture of this country.Heck even the little kids are aware of it's significance in our culture.So Mrs.Swaraj shouldn't unnecessarily stir up another controversy regarding this matter.

Bhagawat Gita (BG) is part of the Mahabharat (MB), let it remain in that way - as an Indian Epic, no need to take the War Manual - independently out of the MB ..

Otherwise do away with the other non secular names as well -

Bhisma
Arjun
Chetak
Tejas
Agni
Prithvi
etc etc

Most are Hindu/Indian origin.
Why did Kalam not think about this when making the Agni I? Communal Kalam.

The Bhagavad Gita is part of the Prasthanatrayi, which also includes the Upanishads and Brahma sutras. These are the key texts for the Vedanta

Your Indian prime minister had done a lot of work. So no work is left for NRI prime minister to do. Your Indian prime minister had build excellent relations with neighbors so NRI PM is just going there to relax. Your Indian prime minister had bought down Inflation to 7 to 8% which has incresed to 1.75% now. From Railway to defense, everything was fine which is Derailed by NRI prime minister.

What is a national scripture anyways? What about Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam? Is the Gita bound to only one nation? Declare it a world scripture instead!

In any case India is a secular republic and there is no question of promoting one religion over another.

No demand is very genuine. Our generations are loosing ethics and morality. We need to bring them back on track. We must give them philosophical teaching which may led them on the path of peace and good. Gita can very much do that. Recently Harward introduced Gita in their syllabus. Today Yoga and Gita are taught in highest institute like Harward and IIMs. But when we try to introduce that inour school syllabus , these moron pops up and oppose who have never opposed any religious based fundamental teaching. We must go ahead with introducing whatever we feel right without any way worrying about these morons. They are on the path of decline and disappear very soon.
